Chapter 76
Feeling a bit drained from all the small talk, Gwyneth turned away. She set her empty glass leaving her hands free. A clear sign she was done with the networking for the night.

Just as she was about to find a quiet corner to rest, Adrian suddenly appeared, blocking her path. He held out a glass of red wine smile and said, “I’m Adrian. Cure to chat for a while, missi”

1 need to rest” Gwyneth said in a deliberately lowered voice, patiently dealing with Adrian. She’d already found his gaze distinctly unsettling
Now he stood blocking her path, one hand casually tucked in his pocket with an air of nonchalance. Even after hearing her answer, he merely shifted sideways–only to obstract her again.
Gwyneth’s brow furrowed slightly in displeasure. She said pointedly. “With so many beautiful wo
women here, why must you single me out?”
Adrian leisurely sized her up. “You remind me of someone I know, he said, his gaze lingering. Her build was similar to Gwyneth’s, though her voice didn’t match; he thought.
He was still lost in thought when Gwyneth subtly tightened her fingers, putting on a facade of perfect composure. “What is it, do I remind you of your mother?” she asked coolly. “T’ve heard rebellious boys often have an Oedipus complex”
You’re nothing like her.” Adrian thought, ‘Gwyneth had never shown me any malice, but this woman’s venomous tongue was downright appalling. Adrian detested being called a man–child. Hearing Gwyneth’s words instantly killed his interest. He was ready to walk away.
Not far away, Melanie glared at the pair, completely unaware that the woman was Gwyneth. Seeing Adrian approach her first sent jealousy coursing through her veins. Overcome by envy, she questioned several people nearby–only to receive the same, surprisingly unanimous answer from each.
“I don’t know her. She clearly didn’t come in with an escort, and she’s definitely not from any of the big–name families. Who the hell is she, anyway?”
The socialites knew every woman in their circle, yet all said they didn’t recognize her. Melanie was bailed. Where did this seductress suddenly pop up from” Since no one could give her an answer, she’d just have to find out herself.
Melanie stormed over furiously. Adrian, already bored, walked away from Gwyneth without a backward glance. Only then did Gwyneth breathe a sigh of relief. But her stepsister was already bearing down on her.
“Who the hell are your Melanie snapped. “Do you even realize who you were just talking to? That was Adrian. The heir to the Lopez family! And you, a nobody, actually dare to try and seduce him right under the noses of all these socialites?”
Melanie’s voice rang out loudly, drawing several people nearby to stop and watch. Gwyneth was taken aback.
“Melanie and Adrian aren’t even officially together yet, Gwyneth thought with disdain. “Where does she get off acting like the wronged wife confronting the mistress! She was just about to remove hier mask and give Melanie a proper reintroduction to who she really was.
“Mrs. Lopez” Clyde suddenly burst in from outside. The moment this address rang out, the crowd erupted into shocked murmurs. Someone in the crowd exclaimed, “Wait, isn’t that Harrison’s personal assistant?”
“Did he just call her Mrs. Lopez? Wait, does that mean she’s Mrs. Lopez?” one of the women said.
“Oh dear, Mr. Lopez is in for it now, How could she be foolish enough to cross Harrison’s woman?” another chimed in.
Melanie stood frozen, staring at the stunning masked woman before her. She murmured. “Gwyneth, how could it be you? But you’re always so plain–faced
“Going bare–faced at work is fine, but dressing up for galas is simply good manners, Gwyneth said coolly, waiting for Clyde to guide her toward the
