Chapter 8
Eugene hurried to the cemetery, clutching chrysanthemums and toys.
“Laura, could you allow me to see our son? I have brought his beloved. Ultraman toys and Lego sets…”
I dismissed the bodyguards and allowed him to approach.
He knelt before the tomb, bowing repeatedly, his shoulders trembling as he cried.
It was difficult to determine if his feelings were sincere.
But I didn’t care.
Just as I was about to walk away, he unexpectedly called out, “Laura, could we speak in private?”
As he said this, he moved a few steps closer to me on his knees.
I gazed down at him with disdain.
I was puzzled by how I had been unable to see through someone so self–interested.
Was I naive, or was he simply an expert at deception?
Maybe my mother’s advice before I got married was spot on. At that time, she told me not to let fleeting affection cloud my judgment when choosing a partner, especially since they wouldn’t always be around to support me. It was easy to be deceived by one’s own emotions.
Back then, I was young and never considered that my feelings might be

wrong. Once I made a decision, I was ready to dive headfirst into any situation without looking back.
And now, this is where I’ve found myself.
“What do you want to talk about? Let’s hear it.”
Eugene glanced behind me.
With my parents and Steve making no move to depart, he pressed his lips together and extended his hand toward me.
A wave of nausea welled up in me, and I avoided his touch.
He lowered his hand slowly and said with a heavy heart, “Our son is already gone. Regardless of the mistakes, it’s all on me. Laura, will you allow me a chance to make amends?
“I refuse to release Stella. She won’t avoid the death penalty. As for myself, you can treat me however you wish, and I won’t object, as long as you stay by my side…”
He talked a good game, but his actions told a different tale.
Initially, I believed he genuinely loved Stellà.
Surprisingly, he was willing to abandon even his true love for his own gain, treating her like a dispensable object.
I had a whole new understanding of his selfishness.
“Are you going to turn yourself in for hiring someone to cause the car accident that hit me? Stella is still your legal wife, isn’t she? You don’t even deserve to treat me like a caged bird.”
Seeing the facade on Eugene’s face dissolve into a look of shock

instantly lifted my spirits.
I clarified things for him to clear up his confusion. “Don’t be surprised at how I know all this. I overheard the conversation you had with your parents on the day your younger brother was buried.
“After that, you obtained the marriage certificate with Stella and acted lovingly in front of me… I see everything clearly.
“Do you really believe I’m still stupid enough to let myself be used by you again, only to be tossed aside when you’re done with me?”
He sank to the ground in despair, his facial expressions shifting
constantly.
His lips, pale and silent, formed words that never emerged.
I moved past him and headed toward the sunlight.
Steve stood behind me and appeared to kick him a few additional
times.
“You’ve brought this upon yourself. Enjoy the good days you have now, because they won’t last much longer.
This reminded me.
I halted and told Eugene, without turning around, “The board meeting will be held in the group’s conference room at 10 a.m. tomorrow.”
His booming voice from behind questioned, “What board meeting? You don’t have the authority to call one…”
Yet, nobody turned around to give him a second glance.
