I’d imagined so many times that Ji Fan was a
cop working undercover.
While I still didn’t know his real identity, I was
certain he wasn’t a bad guy.
I asked my boss for a few days off, went
home, packed some clothes, and got on the
train as the text message had said.
On the train, I counted all the people Ji Fan
had killed in Myanmar.
I realized that the people he killed were all the
really awful guys.
The last time he said goodbye to me was
when he was going on a mission for Yu Jie.
^
He never came back to the camp.
I could tell that Yu Jie was worried, she was
trying so hard to get news of Ji Fan, but I
never saw her smile again.
After Ji Fan went missing, someone told Yu Jie that Ji Fan was working undercover for the police, and she cut his tongue out.
A couple of guys trapped me in the house
and tried to hurt me.
Yu Jie also broke their limbs.
One day, Yu Jie had been drinking and came
to talk to me.
She said that, whether Ji Fan and I had an
affair or not, I was one of the only two people
く
he cared about.
One was her, the other was me.
So, she wasn’t going to let me live badly.
She said that she didn’t believe that Ji Fan
was working for the cops, because Ji Fan had
saved her life several times.
She even told me that Ji Fan wasn’t her
boyfriend.
Because the man she loved had died a
terrible death, trying to save her.
So, she wouldn’t fall in love again.
She only thought of Ji Fan as a little brother,
and Ji Fan thought of her as an older sister.
When she told me all of this, her face showed no tears, when she spoke of her husband, she just choked for a couple seconds.
I was confused, not knowing if she was deep
or cold.
Until I returned to this land and I had
experienced the emotional torture of the
people around me.
I finally understood.
People who love too deeply get hurt.
And when there are too many cold–hearted
people around you, you will learn to protect
yourself.
Closing the gates of your heart, not allowing
anything in or out, was probably the first step
for survival.
After Yu Jie talked to me, the next day she
went back to normal.
It was like Ji Fan had never been a part of her
life.
I thought Ji Fan was dead.
I went back to making Yu Jie meals every day
and talked to her from time to time.
She seemed a little softer, but I was getting
stronger.
When the police raided the camp, Yu Jie was
killed on the spot.
く
When I saw the police, the first thing I asked
was, “Was Ji Fan working undercover for
you?”
The police just looked at me. “Ma’am, you
watch too many movies. There are no
undercover cops. That guy you’re talking
about might not even have a real name.
There’s no point in asking.

I got to the next city over and checked into
the hotel that Ji Fan had told me to.
Five days later, I saw a video online, about the
city I lived in breaking up a human trafficking
ring.
The main guy was the owner of the Jiang
Group, who was using his hotels to prey on
women who checked in alone.
I was stunned.
That was Jenny’s hotel!
I understood why I was kidnapped there!
I grabbed my phone, calling Ji Fan.
But his number was always off.
I called Chad.
“Chad, there was a raid at Jenny’s hotel, do
you know where Chen Mo is?”
Chad laughed coldly. “Sarah, you really are
into that guy, aren’t you? Calling me to ask
<
I lost my patience and said, “You’re an idiot,
just die,” then I hung up.
I called the local police department, but they
said that the case was still under
investigation and they couldn’t share any
information.
I started pacing.
I couldn’t wait any longer.
I grabbed my bags and was about to head to
the train station.
When I got to the lobby, two people came up
to me. A guy and a girl. “Ms. Sarah? We’re
friends of Ji Fan. We’re here to take you to
him.”
く
I was on high alert. “No. I can go by myself.”
“You won’t find him if you go back by
yourself.
I took two steps back. “Why should I trust
you?”
The guy showed me his badge. The woman
held out her phone, showing me a video of Ji
Fan.
