Chapter 11
They chatted for a bit longer before ending the call.
Bethany put her phone away and thought about her cancer.
For seven years, she worked nonstop for her family, never taking
a break.
She married Terrence without a wedding, a ring, or a
honeymoon.
Even when he took Emery to the amusement park or on trips,
she had to stay out of sight.
No matter how cold he was to her, she always smiled.
And when she saw him write Krista’s name on paper, she
pretended not to notice.
Seven years ago, when he walked up to her with strong, steady
steps and said he wanted to marry her, she thought he recognized
her.
It wasn’t until after they got married that she found out he didn’t.
But by then, she didn’t care anymore. She thought now that she

was his wife, he would eventually see how good she was.
However…
Bethany shut her eyes tight, and a wry smile tugged at the corner
of her mouth.
It was no big deal.
From now on, she could do whatever she felt like.
She could be her true self and go wherever she wanted, all by
herself.
Bethany was browsing travel tips online when a news alert
popped up on her phone.
“Anime Master Ms. Cassie Guzman’s National Tour Exhibition –
First Stop: Southmount Stadium.”
She clicked on it and saw that the comic convention was in three
days.
Without a second thought, she bought a ticket online.
Then, she booked a flight to Southmount for tomorrow.
She seldom went back to her hometown, and today, she was planning to visit her grandma’s grave.

So she went out and got some fresh flowers.
After Eliza texted Bethany and didn’t hear back, she tried calling
her a bunch of times, but she never picked up.
It had been a whole day, and she was really worried, so she called
Terrence.
When Terrence saw Eliza’s call, he actually started to feel better.
Thinking Bethany was probably back, he eagerly answered the
phone.
“Mr. McConnell, I’ve been texting Mrs. McConnell, but she won’t
reply. Her phone is on, but nobody is picking up. She’s been gone
for 24 hours now. Should we call the police?”
Eliza sounded worried.
Bethany hadn’t come back yet.
“Mr. McConnell, the meeting is about to start,” said Terrence’s
secretary, Michael Walton.
Terrence spoke into the phone, “She has just been gone for a day. No need to freak out.”
“It’s not that I’m freaking out. You know, Mrs. McConnell has never been away this long.”

Terrence got up, started gathering the meeting papers with one
hand, and said casually, “With Emery at home, she won’t stay
away for long. She’ll be back soon.”
With that, he hung up.
“Mr. McConnell…”
The line went dead. Eliza sighed and put her phone away.
At noon, Krista ordered lunch at Riverspire Bistro and had it sent
to Emery’s school.
The guard told Emery’s teacher that his mom was there and
asked him to come get his lunch.
When he heard his mom was there, he was thrilled.
He really missed his mom’s cooking and ran out as fast as he
could.
But when he was almost at the school gate, he thought that if the guard knew his mom was mute and it got around, he’d get made fun of by his classmates.
In a second, he didn’t want to eat the lunch his mom had made
anymore.
It’d be great if his mom could talk as nicely as Krista.
