Chapter 11
Kevin and I got engaged quickly, set a date.
We picked out rings, a dress.
He was ecstatic, sending pictures to
someone.
“That’s my cousin. We’re really close. I told
him I finally won the heart of the woman I
love.”
“Ashley, we’ll be happy, right?”
I ruffled his hair.
“Of course.”

Afterward, I contacted the talent scout, joined
the agency.
With my musical background, I released my
first original song quickly.
Kevin shared it on social media, proudly
announcing it was his wife’s song.
I didn’t attend John’s wedding.
Mr. Johnson called, but I told him I was getting married too, too busy to travel.

John was being ridiculous.
He’d given me the check, told me never to return.
Now he was holding my amulet hostage?
“Is he there now? Put him on the phone.”
John’s voice came through. “You’re not even
coming to my wedding?”
“I’ve moved on. I’m not coming back.”
I spoke softly.
“Give the amulet to my friend, or mail it to
me.”
He paused. “It’s too valuable to risk losing. I’d
feel better if you picked it up yourself.”
“John, you told me not to come back.”
I reminded him.
“And it’s my amulet. If it gets lost, it’s my
problem.”
“So please, just give it to my friend.”
Silence.
Г
Then I heard Jessica calling him for the
ceremony. He finally spoke. “Come get it yourself.”
He hung up.
I had no choice but to send my friend home.
Why was John being so difficult?
