Chapter 3
I glanced at the bowl. Aside from the mushrooms floating on top, the soup was bland and tasteless, with even a smell of burt. It was obvious it hadn’t been made properly.
The good batch had probably already been delivered to Jenifer.
I took the bowl, and under Ellis’s expectant gaze, set it aside without taking a sip.
As expected,
Ellia grew anxious
“This soup was made by my mother. If you leave it for too long, it’ll get cold. You should drink it while it’s hot. Don’t waste her kindness.”
*Your mother still has kindness left for me? Huh?”
I nearly laughed out loud, but instead spoke with a mocking tone.
Hailee, his mother, had always disliked me for not being soft and delicate enough, believing I wasn’t the kind of daughter–in–law who could manage a household properly.
She also looked down on my modest background, since my parents were farmers in the countryside, and felt I could never compare to Jenifer, the daughter of martyrs.
Her favorite line was, “It was my mistake back then. I should’ve brought Jenifer and Ellis cogether. Oh, I really do love Jenifer so much more than that stubborn, foolish Maryan.”
After both Jenifer and I became pregnant, Hallee, just like Ellis, only had eyes for Jenifer
Any good food in the house would be sent straight to Jenifer’s side, and none ever come my way.
Ellis was fully aware of all this.
Recalling Hailee’s
treatment of me, he had a flicker of guilt crossed his face,
But he quickly came up with an excuse.
“Maryan, you know how my mom is. She’s sharp–tongued buy

Ellis finally let out a sigh of relief and left with the empty bowl, satisfied
Harw very well that the soup had been laced with labor inducing medication.
Not long after, I clutched my belly and cried out in pain, pretending the drug had taken effect,
“Ah! It hurts so much! Is it time? Honey, hurry and take me to the hospital
Ellis and Jenifer exchanged a quick glance, barely able to hide the excitement on their faces
Jenifer immediately placed her hand over her own stomach
“Ellis, I think I’m going into labor tool
*Perfect timing. I’ll take you both to the hospital right away!”
Ellis could barely contain himself as he rushed to the neighbor’s house to borrow a car, then drove us to the hospital.
By the time we arrived, Jenifer’s lower half was already soaking wet, and she was sobbing miserably.
“It hurts so much, Ellis. Am I going to die?”
Heart aching, Ellis quickly carried her in his arms, leaving me with only a ha
a hasty sentence:
Jenifer’s situation is more urgent. You figure out your own way!”
I rolled my eyes at his retreating figure and slowly made my way into the private delivery mom I had arranged ahead of time
Inside stood the doctor whom Ellis had bribed long ago.
Only, what he didn’t know was that just a few days earlier, I had a quiet conversation with that doctor and offered him an even higher price to switch

I lay on the hospital bed for several hours, patiently waiting for the uninvited guest to appear.
Ellis finally sneaked in, cradling a newborn in his arms.
Sering me lying with my eyes closed, he tiptoed into the room, heading straight for the “baby” lying beside me.
Just as he put the bundle down, I called out.
“Honey, what are you doing?”
Ellis, guilty and panicked, jumped at the sound of my voice, nearly dropping the bundle
Luckily, he caught it just in time and forced a simile.
“Nothing. You see, Jenifer already gave birth. I just wanted to come and see you and our baby.”
At that moment, the swapped child, sensing the unfamiliar environment, started wailing loudly.
Elis’s eyes flickered, and he quickly lifted the blanket
The moment he saw the baby, his face darkened with re

roar startled everyone nearby. Patients and their families flooded over, eager to see what was going on
The Glen Families, having just arrived, pushed their way to the front.
Hailee took one look at the dark–eyed baby and gasped.
“Maryan, you shameless whore! My son is a colonel! He is young, handsome, and successful! We even bought a new house when he married you. How could you betray us like this?“!
“You colluded with foreigners and birthed a bastard! How am I supposed to show my face to our ancestors?”
She collapsed ento
to the floor, walang about the disgrace brought upon their family. Even the bystanders, feeling sympathetic, began to scold me alongside her.
Amidst the chaos, Jenifer, looking pale and weak, emerged from bet room.
Seeing the scene unfeld, a flash of triumph fickered in her eyes, though she quickly covered her mouth in feigned shock.
“Oh my, did Mary really give birth to a bastard?”
“I always wondered why she was writing all those weird forin letters at home…
After speaking, Jeriler gave me a regretful look pretending to feel guilty.
“Sorry, Maryan. I guess I shouldn’t have exposed your secret”
Ellis immediately stepped in front of her, shielding her while berating me.
“Maryen, I can’t believe you’re this kind of person! You even exchanged letters with foreign spy?
“Have you been leaking information about our military? You were a soldier once–don’t you know how sensitive this information is?”
“Even if you’re my wile, I won’t protect you! Dad, Mom, hurry up and contact the Defense Intelligence Agency! Tell them we’ve uncovered a spy!” The word “spy” instantly turned the atmosphera vicious.
*Traitor! Lock her up!”
“Yeah! Shame on her! Thank goodness Mr. Gen is righteous enough to expose her!”
“Smash her! Let her know what it feels like to betray her country!”
In a country always on edge about sples, the crowd was easily riled up.
