He pulled out a stack of papers and threw
them at my parents.
“This is the Montgomery Group’s loss after
those rumors tanked the stock price. Take a
look.”
“Blake cut you a break and is only asking for
<
half of the money. Just pay 2 million dollars‘
“Pay as soon as you can, or we’ll have to get
the lawyers involved.”
He ignored Brittany and walked over to me.
He helped me pick up my clothes, folding
them and putting them back in my suitcase.
“Riley, let’s go. Blake is waiting.”
I nodded and got in the car.
I started to gag on the way.
The assistant handed me a bag of pickled
plums.
The packaging said “For Pregnant Women
<
Only.”
I froze.
Pregnant?
My period was late this month.
I needed to get tested.
I told the assistant I had a stomachache and
to see a doctor.
He was about to drive me, but I stopped him.
Before he could object, I got out and hailed a
taxi.
I slapped my forehead.
<
How could I forget to take my birth control
pills?
Brittany wanted to trap Blake with a baby, but
not me!
I rushed to the hospital and booked an
appointment.
But as soon as I was done with my blood test,
I saw Blake in the hallway.
I ducked my head, hoping to hide.
But his bodyguards blocked my path.
I recognized them from that night.
I swallowed hard.
<
I considered blackmailing Blake.
Just then, I heard Logan.
“It’s true, the sister of my heart. She looks so
good.”
“How come you do so good? Have you been
looking to my sister photos?”
“You didn’t say the same thing.”
“I saw her after high graduation.”
Logan laughed.
“Riley, long time no see.”
He wasn’t cold and serious like he was at
work.
He smiled.
I didn’t dare look up.
“Mr. Reynolds, how strange. It’s good to see
you too. I had a stomachache and came to
the hospital.”
“Can I go?”
I tried to run, but someone grabbed my wrist.
Blake’s voice was low.
“Leaving so soon? Are you guilty?”
I decided to bet that he hadn’t seen me that
night.
I forced a smile.
<
“What would I be guilty of? I don’t know
you…”
He smirked, grabbing my blood test form.
“Stomachache?”
I nodded.
“Then why are you testing for pregnancy?”
My face went white, and I stammered, “I… I
got it wrong. Thanks for pointing it out. I’ll go
see a gastroenterologist.”
Before I could move, Logan raised an
eyebrow.
“What are you doing? You’re scaring Riley.”
<
“Guilty! Do you want to come before my mom
and dad so you can kneel to use your home
law?
I didn’t understand what he meant.
But I knew he was the only one who could
help.
I hid behind Logan.
I didn’t notice his soft gaze.
He grabbed my hand and said, “This hospital
belongs to my family. Let me take you there.”
Before I could speak, he led me out of the
room.
On the way, he asked, “Where have you been
<
since you quit? I haven’t heard from you.”
“I have an apartment and you can use it…
Thank you, Mr. Reynolds.”
He looked me up and down.
“You should treat yourself better! Reynolds
pays well, right?”
I didn’t respond, lowering my head.
I
I was afraid of my parents taking the money,
so I never bought new clothes.
I bought everything cheap on the internet.
He seemed to read my mind.
He patted my head.
“You should treat yourself better. Stop hiding
and buy what you want.”
Before I could process that, he continued:
“Blake isn’t as cold as he looks. He’s a good
guy, don’t you think?”
I thought of that night and blushed.
“He’s not cold.
I didn’t know if he would be so calm if he
found out it was me.
He looked at me and took me out of the
hospital.
I was shocked.
He grinned.
“Go home and get some rest. I know you’re
lying.”
Before I left, he looked at my face, lost in
thought.
“You’re the same age as my sister. I wonder
how she is and if she blames me for not
finding her after all these years…”
I knew Logan’s missing sister had been on his
mind a lot.
But I was an outsider.
“She knows you’re looking for her, Mr.
Reynolds. What a great family everyone
wants.”
<
He smiled, staring at me.
“Are you jealous?”
I nodded.
I said goodbye and left the hospital.
He stared at a strand of hair in his hand.
When I got back to my apartment, my parents
spammed my phone:
“Where did you go, you little bitch? Your
sister’s still in jail. You think you’re gonna live
the good life? No way!”
“This is all your fault! If you stopped her, we
wouldn’t be in this mess!”
