Heartbroken Farewell
Chapter 1
My mega–rich parents, convinced my sister
and I were plotting to steal their fortune, kept us on a measly $200 allowance a month.
Then my sister got hit by a car, clinging to
life. When I begged my parents for money for the surgery, they just sneered, “You’ll use any excuse to get money, won’t you? Desperate
much!”
“You could at least try a little harder. Next
time, Photoshop a death certificate.”
Completely broke, I had to resort to illegal underground boxing to get the money quickly.
After nearly getting killed, I finally scraped
together enough for her surgery.
<
But when I went to pay the hospital, I
discovered the whole damn account was
empty.
Before I could even ask the boxing promoter
what the hell was going on, my parents called.
“That’s a pretty big deposit in your account.
You didn’t secretly get the CFO to transfer
money did you? Guess we spoil you two too
much.”
“We took the money back. Consider it a
lesson. We’re cutting your allowance in half,
starting now!”
Then, click, they hung up. No room for
argument.
My sister died in the hospital because she
couldn’t get the surgery.
Right after the funeral, I saw my adopted
sister’s post online.
“Just got a brand new McMansion! Thanks to
the best parents EVER! ~”
Staring at the three–million–dollar house, I
just sat there for a long moment. Then I liked
the post and commented, “Congrats, you’ll
get everything.”
1
Stepping out of the funeral home, the wind
cut like a knife.
I clutched my sister’s picture, knuckles white.
My phone blared to life, “Dad” flashing on
the screen.
I barely said hello before he started yelling.
“What did you post online! Take it down,
now!”
“Haley’s got a cold as it is. Your comment
has her crying, and almost ended her up in
the hospital!”
Same old routine.
Haley’s go–to move – play the victim, and
Mom and Dad would give her anything.
I used to try and explain myself.
Now, I was just tired and angry.
く
I licked my lips and my voice cracked.
“Did I lie?”
“Have you two treated my sister and I like
daughters? Haley’s the only family you care
about.”
There was silence, and then Mom’s voice,
“Honey, Haley’s school is so far away. We
got the house so she can go to school
easier.”
“You’re the older sister. You have to be
understanding!”
Easier for her to get to school?
My sister and I went to the same school as
Haley. My sister and I spent hours on the bus
<
every day, and every time we asked to be
dropped off, we were called “wasteful.”
Haley had a private driver.
My sister was dying, and they wouldn’t pay
for it, yet bought Haley a three–million–dollar
house.
Which one of us was their actual daughter?
Rage choked me.
Dad, cut Mom off. “What’s the point in
explaining it to her? I’ll give my daughter
whatever she wants! If she doesn’t apologize
to Haley, she’s not doing the art competition
she mentioned!”
The art competition…
く
My sister loved to paint, and her teachers
said she had real talent.
They said if she won the competition, she’d
get into her dream school.
To save the entry fee, my sister didn’t eat
breakfast and was really careful about
spending money.
She couldn’t save enough money.
So, we begged our parents and they
reluctantly agreed.
Haley got whatever she wanted.
When my sister and I got sick, they told us to
“just tough it out.”
H
<
When Haley coughed once, Mom and Dad got
specialists for her.
Memories slammed into me, washing me
under.
I saw my sister in the hospital bed, white,
barely breathing.
She kept looking for our parents. Until finally,
the lights in her eyes faded.
She was consoling me, smiling and saying
Mom and Dad loved me and that I shouldn’t
blame them and try to get along with them.
She told me she’d watch over me from
Heaven.
L
Tears blurred my vision, and I started
laughing.
“I told the truth, and I won’t apologize.”
“The entry fee? Give it to your adopted
daughter!”
“I don’t need parents like you!”
I hung up.
