“Work,” Ellis replied tersely, shifting her gaze aside to avoid looking at the old man who reeked of paternalism.
Emma couldn’t force me to find another man to marry, and now others were trying to dictate my choices? Ridiculous.
She exited the elevator, leaving the executive behind, and couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
After handling the document issue, Ellis returned to the executive office. But before she could even sit down, Lois called her into her office, saying there was a work matter to discuss in person.
Morty hadn’t left; he was still in Lois’s office.
When he saw her enter, he didn’t say anything; he just looked at her with a blatantly joyful smile, as if merely seeing her brightened his heart.
Her discernment wasn’t particularly strong or weak, but it was definitely within the range of normal.
For a moment, she actually caught a glimpse of sincerity in Morty’s smile.
He seemed genuinely interested in a real relationship, without any ulterior motives. People were hard to read, she thought. Better not to overinterpret Morty’s intentions.
Ellis focused all her attention on Lois, greeting her with a light smile, “Madam Lois.”
Before responding to Ellis, Lois thoughtfully scanned Morty.
Morty’s unusually bright smile towards Ellis was hard to ignore.
She had heard some office rumors about them before.
At the time, she thought it was just employees gossiping. Now, it seemed like Morty might genuinely have romantic intentions towards Ellis.
And what about Easton? He had asked her to bring Ellis back from abroad and had just contacted her through Lois yesterday, clearly indicating his intentions to reconcile with Ellis.
And Morty, Easton’s childhood friend, was well–known in high society circles.
One chasing his ex–wife for a reunion, the other pursuing his friend’s ex–wife. Suddenly, Lois felt like she was caught in a tangled mess.
Lois took a long time to get to the work details, her gaze shifting back and forth between herself and Morty, clearly evaluating, making Ellis think back to the question the executive had asked in the elevator.
The outrageous gossip that Morty was nearly her boyfriend couldn’t possibly have reached Lois, could it?
Noticing a change in Ellis’s expression, Lois began discussing work as usual.
The collaboration between Nexus Group and Tate Group was progressing deeply, and although Ellis was no longer handling the big and small aspects of the project, there were still minor tasks Lois couldn’t handle herself that required her personal assistant’s involvement.
She carefully noted down the key points Lois mentioned, while Morty’s unabashed smile was constant by her side.
Is it my imagination, or since I broke the ice, Morty has stopped holding back?
Frustrated! As she left Lois’s office, Morty gave her a cheeky eyebrow raise as if saying goodbye.
Ellis uncontrollably covered her face with her hand, suppressing the urge to roll her eyes in front of her boss, while silently cursing Morty a few times.
After Ellis left, as soon as the door closed behind her, Lois intentionally cleared her throat.
It was a reminder to Morty that Ellis was off to work and there was no need to keep staring at her.

Morty, missing the cue, looked at Lois with concern, “Madam Lois, is your throat uncomfortable?”
“No,” Lois touched the middle of her neck, “Mr. Morty, shall we continue discussing work?”
“Sure,” Morty nodded.

Not a public figure, but Ellis was learning what it meant to be a subject of gossip. On her way back to her desk, she passed a colleague and accidentally saw her own name prominently displayed in a chat window on their computer.
She only glimpsed briefly and didn’t see the full conversation, but she could guess they were definitely gossiping about her.
When the colleague noticed her passing, they quickly closed the chat window and pretended to work diligently.
Dignity came to mind as she sat down at her desk, choosing not to dwell on what others might be saying behind her back.
With plenty of work to do, she was busy until night fell. As the darkness outside caught her eye, she belatedly felt a soreness in her shoulders and neck, gently shaking her head and stretching.
As her hands were still extended, she saw Morty leaving Lois’s office and inadvertently met his gaze looking her way.
Their eyes met, and despite the distance, it was somewhat awkward.
She quickly looked away, pretending she hadn’t seen Morty.
Fortunately, this time Morty didn’t embarrassingly seek her out, adding more fodder for office gossip. He took the elevator down instead.
However, she thought too soon.
While Morty didn’t come to her in person, he sent her a message on WhatsApp.
“It’s New Year, happy holidays!”
“I wonder if I might have the honor of inviting you to dinner tonight?”
The two messages made her frown, and she closed her screen expressionlessly.
Morty couldn’t possibly think that her acceptance of his New Year’s gifts and coffee meant she was open to further advances?
After resting her eyes for a moment, Ellis reopened her screen.
Morty had sent another WhatsApp message! “Five minutes and no reply, I understand.”
