Liam kept his eyes locked on me and Leonard, his gaze now tinged with red.
At last, he picked up a wine glass and forced a smile.”My mistake. Today is Ellie’s big day. This toast is to her–may all her wishes come true.”
He offered me another glass, his eyes filled with a strange mixture of hope and unease.
I was about to decline when Leonard silently stepped in.“Ellie’s allergic to alcohol. I’ll drink this for her.”
Without hesitation, he took the glass and downed it in one go.
The gesture hit Liam hard–it was a declaration of ownership. He visibly trembled, his expression turning even more bitter.
The scene triggered a memory: the time

he had been cornered by someone and I stepped in, drinking the final glass on his behalf.I ended up in the hospital that night.
Bitterness welled up inside him. He was lost, filled with regret.
Liam gave me one last long look, his shoulders sagging, then turned and left.
After the banquet, Leonard leaned against me, his scent crisp with a hint of mint. My cheeks flushed.
“I think I’m drunk,” he murmured. “Are you going to take me home?”
His words caught me off guard. I didn’t know where to look.”W–What are you talking about?”
Leonard straightened up, his tone suddenly wounded.“I get it. You think I’m just some blind guy. It’s fine–I understand.”

Wasn’t he supposed to be the cold, stoic type? Apparently, the rumors were wrong. My heart softened.”I don’t think that at all. I’m sorry. I’ll go find someone to get you a room.”
His assistant twitched slightly, clearly disturbed by the sight of an ‘iceberg‘ man putting on a pitiful act.
But Leonard didn’t let up. He grabbed my wrist.“You’re really going to marry a blind man like me?”
I looked at him. His sunglasses covered his eyes, but they did nothing to hide his good looks. And thinking about how flawlessly he’d handled everything earlier–it was hard to believe he was blind at all.
I couldn’t help scanning him head to toe. Broad shoulders, narrow waist… his physique was undeniably appealing.
My face burned hotter, and I instinctively stepped back.

Leonard leaned closer. “Are you blushing?”
Startled, I turned and accidentally knocked off his sunglasses.
I bent down to retrieve them, but he was quicker, snatching them up first.
And that’s when it hit me.”You can see?” I blurted out.
Leonard tucked the glasses into his pocket, then pulled me into his arms.”I had surgery recently. The doctor said I need to avoid strong light. I never meant to deceive you.”
My heart sank.”Then you should put your sunglasses back on.”
If he wasn’t blind, didn’t that mean all my assumptions were wrong? With the Lancaster Family’s power, dealing with the Windsors would be child’s play.
A chill crept down my spine. Leonard

immediately shrugged off his coat and draped it over me.“Cold? Let’s head back.”
I could only nod, mind spinning.
Halfway there, Leonard stopped, pulled a necklace from his pocket, and fastened it around my neck.
I instinctively touched the pendant–and suddenly froze.“You… you were the one who saved me!”
Back in high school, I’d run away from home and nearly got kidnapped. A boy rescued me that night, hiding me in a trash bin while he led the pursuers away.
Later, it was Liam who found me, and from that point on, I looked at him differently.l started noticing everything about him, eventually falling for him like a moth to a flame.

–it was what he represented. If it hadn’t been Liam who found me, it would’ve been someone else.
Leonard, his voice tinged with jealousy, said, “It was me. You promised you’d repay me with your life. Who knew you’d vanish without a word?”
I flushed with guilt and embarrassment, not knowing how to respond.
Leonard chuckled.“But it’s fine. I still found you in the end. Guess Liam’s only talent was getting in my way.”
I smiled, letting him pull me into his arms.
Not far off, hidden in a corner, Liam stood frozen, watching the scene unfold.
His eyes were red, his chest tight with pain. Every interaction between me and Leonard replayed in his mind, frame by frame.

He didn’t want to admit it, but I knew–he liked me. He liked having me close, but hated being treated as the fallback option.
So he always acted superior, trying to hold the upper hand.
Now, all he could do was watch as Leonard and I drove away, disappearing from his sight.
