Chapter 104
Mona’s face fell. “You graduated from Ashwood University. Don’t tell me you don’t have money. And your so–called filend just let you in this apartment? He’s obviously loaded. Why not just have him give you the place?”
Maxine let out a cold laugh. “You’ve really got some nerve.”
Mona was about to snap back, but when she met Maxine’s deep, icy gaze, her confidence crumbled before she could even speak. “I’m not asking yousts support us. I know I remarried, and your stepdad’s racked up a ton of debt doing business these past few years. I’m not asking for much, just help me pay. off that 700 thousand dollars, and I’ll take Miles and leave.”
Maxine didn’t even hesitate. “Don’t even think a

out. Maxine’s face went cold as she shot up from the sofa and strode quickly toward the
Both her room and Jessica’s were upstairs. Mona hurried after her, grumbling under her breath, “That little brat, never a moment’s peace!”
The hallway outside the bedrooms was a mess. Cabinets and decorations were all knocked over, and there were several glaring footprints on the dove- gray sofa cushion.
The light in Jessica’s room was on. Maxine walked straight over.
Miles Shortle was standing by the table, a fancy coffee set smashed on the floor. A few tiny cups had rolled onto the carpet and survived, but the coffee pot’s spout had broken off and ended up by the door.
Miles’s chubby hands were still clutching the stuffed animal Jessica kept on her bed.
The next second, Maxine grabbed him by the collar with one hand and dragged him out.
Mona said, “Hey! What the hell are you doing?”
Miles said, “Mom!”
Their screams rang out almost at the same time. Even though Miles was a chubby kid, he was still just a child. After a few struggles, he realized he couldn’t break free and started bawling loudly.
Mona rushed over to pull him away, but Maxine kicked her in the leg.
She stumbled, then lunged at Maxine again. Just then, Maxine shoved Miles toward her and said, “If you can’t control your kid, I can do it for you.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Mona’s face darkened as she got ready to argue.
Just then, Cleo’s voice rang out from downstairs: “Maxine!”
Maxine remembered making that coffee set with Jessica when she first moved in. Jessica had always treasured it, using those tiny cups every day. Now that it was broken, Maxine could only imagine how heartbroken she’d be.
Maxine, face like thunder, called back to Cleo, then turned to Mona. “I don’t have 700 thousand dollars. Take your son and get out. Today.”
With that, she spun around and headed downstairs. Mona’s face twisted in anger as she shouted, “Fine! You think you’re so tough now? Let’s see what your friend has to say about this!”
Clutching Miles, Mona hurried down the stairs after her.
When they got downstairs, they saw a man and a woman standing at the door.

Just from their outfits, it was obvious they were loaded. Mona knew that rich people were never easy to deal with Mend who aba speech, suddenly lost her nerve and didn’t dare say a word.
“Urban?” Maxine raised her eyebrows in surprise. “What are you doing here?”
Urban was dressed to impress in a tailored suit, a pricey sapphire brooch pinned to his chest. Even his hair was perfectly styled. He looked at me together than the last time she’d seen him at the racetrack.
