Maxine sat heavily on the sofa, her head pounding, and let out a deep sigh. “Sorry you had to see that.”
The other two sat down with her. Cleo, still reeling from Mona’s behavior, couldn’t help but say, “How can she act like that? you two really don’t seem like mother and daughter at all.”
She said it as gently as she could, worried about hurting Maxine’s feelings.
Maxine looked completely drained. “She’s always been like this, ever since I was a kid.”
Mona was hardly ever involved in her life. As far as Maxine could remember, her mom was either out shopping or hanging out with her friends, while Micah would rush home after work just to cook for her.
For years, Maxine never really understood why. It wasn’t until she met Miles that she finally realized. It wasn’t because she wasn’t good enough, but because Mona just cared more about having a son than a daughter.
“If you don’t give her money, she’ll never let it go,” Urban said, hitting the nail on the head.
“Then let her call the police,” Maxine said flatly, pulling out her phone to call someone to clean up the mess upstairs.
“Are you coming with us tonight?” Sebastian asked her.
Maxine was about to say no, but Cleo shot her a pleading look from the side.
She hesitated for a moment, then let out a sigh. “Alright, what time does it start?”
Urban smiled. “Go get ready. We’ll head out now. I’ll have a bodyguard pick up Jessica, and for now, our mission is to pick out new dresses for the two of you.”
It was only then that Maxine realized all her formal dresses were still at home. If she was going, she’d definitely need to buy a new one.
“Don’t worry about it,” Cleo said, slinging an arm around Maxine’s shoulders. “We’ll go pick something out ourselves, and you can just reimburse us later.”
After dropping them off at the mall, Urban left, respecting their wish to shop on their own.
Inside the store, Cleo handed Maxine a coffee, looking a little apologetic. “I’m really sorry for dragging you into this. If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have to deal with him again.”
Then she pouted, her voice full of frustration. “But this is such a rare chance. Getting a story on Avery Soto is nearly impossible. If I can get close to him tonight, I won’t have to worry about my salary for the rest of the year.”
Cleo had mentioned that name before. Apparently, Avery was the heir to some famous calligrapher. But there were never any photos of him online, so no one knew if Cleo would actually get to meet him.
“No big deal,” Maxine said, “Just treat me to dinner when it’s all done.”
With that, she headed over to a nearby clothing store. The last time she needed a dress, Sebastian had taken her to get something custom–made, but that was a one–time thing. Honestly, Maxine wasn’t a fan of those super tight dresses.
Cleo hurried after her.
Century Square was massive. The two of them spent two hours shopping before finally picking out their outfits. Cleo then found a rest. reviews and insisted on treating Maxine to a meal.

Chapter 107
Cleo grinned mysteriously and patted the backpack next to her. “Relax and eat up! I just bought shapewear, to no one vit potior a mile an food at those parties is mostly for show. If we don’t eat now, we’ll be starving later”
As she spoke, Cleo used the serving spoon to put some beef on Maxine’s plate.
She wasn’t wrong. At those kinds of social events, people barely got a chance to eat.
Maxine took a bite. The food was actually pretty good. But when she glanced out the window, she
suddenly froze.
They were sitting upstairs by the window, and from where Maxine was, she could see the plaza below. Two familiar figures caught her ept. It was Sebastian and Brian.
