Chapter 110
Urban paused for a second, then heard Cleo whisper in her ear, “I don’t care if you want to ask Maxine out, but you really can’t day it fight in fears of mo husband and son.”
So, the four of them walked into the Hain Building’s party hall together.
Standing next to Sebastian, Maxine felt all eyes on them. She leaned over and said quietly, “I’m just here with Cleo tonight. I don’t plan to stay long. Jessica is still waiting for me at home.”
Sebastian didn’t say anything, but Brian pursed his lips and tugged at Maxine’s sleeve.
Maxine looked down at him. With a serious little face, he said, “Don’t get the wrong idea. It’s not that I can’t let you go. There are just so many people here, I don’t want us to get separated.”
“Mr. Mason!” A man in a sharp suit walked up with a big smile to greet them.
He glanced at Maxine first, then smiled and said, “I’d heard some rumors before, but it looks like you and your wife are actually getting along really well! And your little one is adorable.”
Maxine shot him a look but didn’t bother to set the record straight.
“Mommy, I want something to eat,” Brian tugged at Maxine’s hand.
A bit surprised by his sudden change in attitude, Maxine paused for a second, then led him over to a table off to the side.
There were some desserts laid out, but since most people were busy networking, hardly anyone was near the food. Maxine picked up a pastry for him.
Brian wrinkled his nose and turned away. “I don’t want that one.”
With a helpless sigh, Maxine set the plate aside and let him look for himself. Brian stretched up on tiptoe, clinging to the edge of the table, then turned back with a blank face and said, “I can’t see.”
The table was actually a bit high, so Maxine had no choice but to bend down and pick him up.
Nestled in her arms, Brian started giving directions, “A little to the right. I want that one.”
Maxine shifted a few steps to the left, and Brian reached out, grabbed a plate from the table, and helped himself to a few cream puffs.
A snide voice sounded from behind them. “Since when do they let a nanny into these parties?”
Maxine turned around to find a woman in a black dress and shawl standing behind her. The woman ran her fingers through her long hair and looked at Maxine with a sneer. “How did you get in here? Don’t you realize there’s a party going on?”
Maxine glanced down at her cream–colored dress. She’d picked something simple on purpose when she bought it. She didn’t think someone would mistake her for a nanny.
She almost laughed and thought, ‘When are these people ever going to stop judging others by their clothes?‘
Brian cocked his head. “Who are you calling the nanny?”
The woman rolled her eyes. “Whose kid is this? Didn’t anyone teach you to say hello when you see someone?”
Her face was unfamiliar. Maxine hadn’t seen her before. She was probably new to these kinds of events and didn’t really know anyone yet. The Mason family’s business was top–tier in the industry, and back when Maxine used to attend with Sebastian, everyone went out of their way to flatter her. Running into someone like this was actually kind of novel.
Brian didn’t say a word, just grabbed Maxine’s hand and tried to leave.
