Chapter 116
Urban didn’t stick around for long before heading out, so Maxine packed up and went to pick up Jessica.
She was actually pretty happy when she found out they’d all be moving in with Cleo. Having a few people under one roof just made her feel more livet –
Once everything was sorted, Maxine headed over to Urban’s law firm. Since her resignation paperwork hadn’t gone through yet, she was technically just a temp, but Brian still made sure she got her own private office.
Everyone at the firm knew Maxine was personally brought in by the big boss to help manage things, and honestly, the work environment here was miles better than her last place.
When it came to Mona, she didn’t even bother hiding her whereabouts online. In fact, she seemed to be loving the perks of her internet fame. These days, she was livestreaming every single day, going on and on about all her “tragic experiences,” and even hawking products to her viewers.
The police actually found her right in the middle of one of her livestreams.
It was Miles who opened the door for them, and by the time Mona realized what was happening, the officers were already standing right in front of her.
Mona jumped in fright, gave a little shudder, and then quickly shut off her livestream.
One of the officers glanced around the cramped rental apartment and said, “Mrs. Parks, we suspect you’re involved in a case. Please come with us to answer some questions.”
In that instant, Mona immediately thought of Maxine, who’d kicked her out after refusing to give her money She plopped down on the floor, bawling and wiping away her tears as she wailed, “I knew that heartless girl would call the cops on me! I raised her all these years, and just because I asked her to help pay off some debts, she actually called the police!”
The middle–aged officer looked a bit exasperated. Over the past few days, they’d already contacted people from Maxine’s hometown to confirm the situation, and after talking to them, they had a pretty good idea of what had gone on.
The officer thought, ‘Sure, Micah was a scammer, but Maxine was just a kid. How could a mother be so cold as to abandon her own child?‘
The young officer behind him sounded impatient as he said, “We’ll look into the details. For now, please come with us.”
Mona glanced at Miles, who was standing off to the side looking completely unfazed, and started crying again. “But I still have a child…”
The police had already anticipated this. Two female officers stayed behind with Miles, while the rest took Mona away.
Maxine unlocked her phone and started scrolling through videos, when she spotted a screen recording of Mona’s livestream. In the video, Mona was looking all pitiful, holding up a bag of instant food and trying to pitch it. Suddenly, she seemed to catch something out of the corner of her eye. Her face froze, and the next second, the stream just cut to black.
The comments section was blowing up, everyone trying to figure out what just happened.
Maxine skimmed through the comments. Some people were even accusing her of getting back at Mona out of spite.
“Maybe the cops really did show up at her door,” Maxine snorted, a mocking smile
on her lips.
Maxine couldn’t care less about whatever Mona posted online. Other than that one address, nobody would ever connect her to Maxine anyw They hadn’t spoken in years, and Mona didn’t even have a single photo of her from when she was a kid.
After work, Maxine picked up Jessica from school and bought her some cupcakes on the way home. But when they got back, she was caught off guard for
once.
Brian was crouched outside Cleo’s building, backpack on and a small suitcase by his side. As soon as he saw her, he grumbled, “What took you so long?
You’re so slow!”
