Chapter 127
After spending some time together, the two kids were getting along much better than before.
Brian might still have his little prince attitude, but with Maxine around, he couldn’t really boss Jessica around. So after a while, the two of them actually, started playing together pretty well.
These past few days, Maxine’s attitude toward Brian had also softened a lot compared to before.
She took the drawing from Jessica. In the picture, a little girl was lying on her bed with a picture book in front of her, hands cupping her cheeks as she read with total focus.
“This is my very first drawing!” Jessica announced. “I’m going to make a frame for it and hang it on the wall.”
Maxine encouraged her, “Why not make one together with Brian? If you’re missing any supplies, just let Mom know.”
Jessica nodded, then caught sight of all the tiny words on Maxine’s screen. She said in surprise, “Maxine, you’re amazing! You can read so many words.” Maxine couldn’t help but laugh. “Learning to read just takes practice. If you keep at it every day, you’ll get the hang of it.”
Brian wandered over for a look at her screen, let out a little grunt, and didn’t say a word.
It was a beautiful weekend, so Maxine took the kids out for some fun. She hadn’t expected to run into Kathleen, who looked even more disheveled than last time. The moment Kathleen spotted Maxine, she shot her a glare full of resentment.
Gabriel had been stirring up all kinds of trouble lately, and Kathleen had basically become his personal lawyer. On top of that, she was bending over backwards to make a good impression on Sebastian, constantly covering things up. After a while, it was no wonder she was running out of steam.
Meanwhile, even after being dragged through the rumor mill, Maxine still looked as put–together and radiant as ever.
Seeing Maxine looking so fresh and glowing, Kathleen could barely stop herself from lunging over and clawing at her face.
“Maxine, look! Brian bought me this huge cotton candy!” Jessica ran over, waving her bunny–shaped treat in front of Maxine, her face beaming with excitement.
Brian followed behind, grumbling, “It’s just cotton candy. Does she really have to get this worked up?”
Kathleen wasn’t far away and heard every word. The second she spotted Brian, her eyes widened. She thought, ‘So that’s why I haven’t seen him at the Mason house these past few days. He’s been with Maxine all along.
After making so many wasted trips, Kathleen clenched her teeth in frustration.
These days, she was not only buried in Gabriel’s endless lawsuits, but also trying to cozy up to the Mason family. But every time she showed up, the butler would greet her with an awkward look, saying Sebastian was away on business and Brian had been sent off somewhere else.
Having made all those pointless visits, seeing Brian and Maxine together now made Kathleen’s blood boil with jealousy.
Maxine seemed determined to pretend she hadn’t seen Kathleen, keeping her head down and chatting with the two kids. But Kathleen walked right over with a bright smile and greeted her, “Hey, long time no see!“.
Maxine narrowed her eyes, a little surprised that Kathleen actually came over to say hi.
Brian looked genuinely happy to see her. “Kathleen!” he called out.
Kathleen grinned and ruffled his hair. “Such a good boy. I was just wondering why I hadn’t seen you these past few days. So you’ve been hanging out with your mom?”
Then she turned to Jessica, who was holding a stick of cotton candy. “And who’s this little girl?”
Chapter 127
Jessica shrank back behind Maxine, a bit nervous. She’d heard Brian mention Kathleen when they played together, so she knew this was the so talked about. But for some reason, Jessica just didn’t like her.
