Jessica looked up shyly and said, “Hello, Kathleen.”
Kathleen didn’t pay her much attention. Her focus was on the Mason family from the start. She turned to Brian and said, “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming out today?”
Before Brian could answer, she leaned in and lowered her voice, “Since when are you and your mon so close? Why didn’t you give me a heads up?
She didn’t speak loudly, but it was just enough for the group to hear.
Maxine couldn’t be bothered to argue, but Jessica blinked innocently and asked, “Kathleen, Brian is Maxine’s son. Why does he need to tell you?”
Kathleen’s face twisted for a split second.
But as soon as Brian looked over, she quickly put on a sweet smile and said, “Because we’re good friends!”
Brian nodded, and Kathleen kept pushing, “I just saw a super fun roller coaster over there. Let’s go ride it together!”
If she could get Brian away, she’d have a reason to run into Sebastian later.
Jessica pouted, clearly unhappy. She didn’t want Brian to leave.
She quickly chimed in, “I want to go too! Let’s all go together!”
Kathleen hesitated, “But you’re a bit too young, Jessica. The staff probably won’t let you on. How about you and Maxine wait for us down here?”
Jessica was usually so well–behaved, but she shook her head seriously. “No, I want to go with you guys.”
Kathleen looked at Maxine, a little helpless. “Can’t you talk to her? I just want to take Brian to have some fun. He doesn’t seem that happy hanging out with you all anyway.”
Maxine shot her a look, clearly annoyed. “Can you stop pretending already?”
Kathleen looked surprised, then put on a hurt face. “I just want Brian to have a good time.”
She glanced at Brian, obviously hoping he’d back her up.
But for once, Brian didn’t take her side. “Jessica’s right. Since we all came out together, I can’t just leave her behind.”
Kathleen clenched her fists and forced a smile. “You’re right, I didn’t think it through. I just wanted to spend some time with you, that’s all.”
Brian glanced between the two of them, then walked over and took Maxine’s hand, “I want to spend today with Mom. Let’s all hang out together next time, okay?”
To him, it was simple. Jessica had been looking forward to this outing for ages. If he suddenly left with Kathleen now, that would make him someone who didn’t keep his word.
Kathleen instinctively shot Maxine a look, thinking she must’ve said something bad about her to Brian.
But with the kid right there, she couldn’t say anything directly. So she just lowered her voice and said, “Alright, next time we’ll go ou ether. If anything comes up, just let me know, okay?”
Maxine watched her put on the act, finding it all pretty ironic.
“Maxine!” someone called out.
Maxine turned around and saw her old college roommate, Sidney Keller, standing not far away.

“When did you get back?” Maxine asked, pleasantly surprised.
