Maxine split the food between the two kids, then said, “By the way, I really owe you for this one!
If it hadn’t been for Sidney’s help, putting Mona in her place would’ve taken a lot more effort.
Sidney waved her off. “It was nothing, really. I was just passing something along for”
She stopped mid–sentence, suddenly realizing she’d said too much, and quickly stuffed a bite of food in her mouth to cover it up.
“What was that?” Maxine caught on immediately. “Passing something along for who?”
Seeing there was no way to hide it, Sidney mumbled, “Actually, not long after you came to me, Sebastian found me and asked me to give you those documents.”
Maxine froze, surprised he’d been helping out behind the scenes.
Brian looked up. “My dad?”
Sidney smiled at him. “Yep, your dad really cares about your mom. He did a lot to help her out this time.”
But whatever drama was going on between the two of them, Sidney had no intention of getting involved.
They chatted about what was new, like how Louis was planning to expand into Hatholand and had started working with some of the country’s top tech
companies.
When Sidney heard Maxine was planning to move abroad, she was honestly a bit reluctant to see her go. “If you ever want to come back, just do it. We’re still short–staffed, and with your resume, you’d get in no problem.”
Louis also handed her a business card, saying if things didn’t work out overseas, she could reach out to his second sister for help.
Since Maxine was taking Jessica with her this time, she kept Louis’s card.
Brian stared at his bowl of food, lips pressed together in a sulky pout.
Maxine remembered everything Sidney had said. When she got home, she reached out to Sebastian. He didn’t try to take any credit for it. He just said, “You’re my wife. Of course, I should help you.”
Her expression softened a little. “Thank you.”
It had been ages since Sebastian had heard her speak to him like that. For a moment, he was stunned, and after a while, he said, “I heard from Gabriel that you’ve quit your job.”
“Yeah,” Maxine replied, “Once things are wrapped up here, I’m heading overseas. I can’t just leave my contract hanging at the firm.”
Sebastian said, “We can’t get divorced. Brian needs his mom.”
Hearing that, Maxine froze. She thought, ‘But what about Sebastian?‘
She tightened her grip on her phone, forcing herself not to ask the question out loud. Taking a deep breath, she said, “Let’s just see how things go.”
In the president’s office at Noxen Group, Sebastian sat at his desk, staring at the endless files on his screen. After a long silence, he fina” murmured, “Alright…”
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll hang up now,” Maxine said.
She heard Sebastian’s quiet confirmation on the other end and was about to end the call when he spoke again, his voice barely above a whisper, “I need you to stay, too.”

Maxine paused for a moment, then hung up.
Sebastian leaned against the wall by the doorway, his face unreadable as he stared straight ahead.
The day of Gabriel’s trial arrived quickly. Maxine was up at the crack of dawn, carrying the files she’d spent the last few days tirelessly preparing »> af made her way to the courthouse.
The case was making waves. So many people wanted to watch that the seats were hard to come by. Fortunately, Sebastian managed to pull some strings so Cleo could get in too.
Gabriel showed up as the defendant, represented by a star lawyer from another firm.
Once everyone was seated, the judge announced the start of the trial.
