Chapter 133
Brian’s face went pale in an instant, but he still forced himself to say, “Mom, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Maxine fell silent, deeply disappointed in him.
She had thought that after all this time with her, Brian would have changed for the better. When he turned down Kathleen at the amusement park last time, she really thought it was a good sign.
She never imagined her own son would stab her in the back like this.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, then looked at him with a blank expression. “Do you have any idea how important the things you took are to Jessica?”
Jessica looked up in confusion, and Maxine signaled to Urban to take her out for now.
Maxine said, “Jessica’s mom, she was-”
Just thinking about it made her emotions spiral out of control. After forcing herself to swallow her anger, she continued, “Because of that person, Jessica’s mom died. That USB drive had crucial evidence, and you took it!
“Do you know how much that meant to Jessica? Her mom almost died for nothing!”
Seeing her getting more and more agitated, Sebastian frowned and stopped her. “Maxine!”
Maxine realized she might scare Brian like this, so she turned her face away. “Go home with
your
dad today.”
“No!” Brian blurted out, his usual calm completely gone.
Sebastian caught the exchange between them and seemed to put the pieces together. He asked quietly, “What did you do?”
Brian’s whole body trembled. He stared at the floor, silent. He knew he’d messed up. After his last trip out, Kathleen had actually come to his school, told him Maxine was getting ready for a divorce, and even gave him the court date.
He didn’t want his parents to split up. Yesterday, when he saw Maxine packing up some documents, he agonized for ages before sneaking into the study under the excuse of looking for a book, and found the folder sitting on the desk.
Just like Kathleen said, there was a stack of paperwork inside. Too scared of being caught, Brian didn’t even check what was written. He just grabbed the
USB drive tucked in with the files.
It wasn’t until now that he finally realized Kathleen had lied to him. He kept his head down, fists clenched tight, not even daring to look at Maxine.
His voice shook as he said, “I’m not leaving. I didn’t know what was in there. Kathleen told me to…”
Maxine thought, ‘Kathleen again.‘
She looked at him. “That’s enough. If you think Kathleen’s so wonderful, then go to her.”
Realizing she was losing her cool, Maxine turned to Sebastian. “I’m heading out. Have Charles come by later to pick up Brian’s stuff.”
Brian tried to run after her, but Sebastian held him back.
“She’s not planning to take you home with her, Sebastian said bluntly.
Brian’s eyes were red as he watched her walk away, scrubbing at his tears with the back of his hand.
After saying goodbye to Charles, Cleo took Maxine and Jessica home. Cleo immediately picked up on Maxine’s off mood, and Jessica didn’t even dare ask why Brian wasn’t coming back with them.
