Cleo was stunned and couldn’t help blurting out, “Kathleen!”
She stopped herself halfway, suddenly remembering Jessica was sitting in the back. She swallowed the rest of her words, holding it in fons moment before finally muttering, “So heartless!”
Honestly, that was the most polite thing Cleo had ever said about Kathleen.
The atmosphere in the car grew tense. After a while, Cleo said, “Brian’s just a kid. Kathleen just had to say a few nice things and he fell for it. At least things turned out okay, so try not to be too upset.”
Maxine closed her eyes, leaning her forehead against the car window, looking exhausted.
She wasn’t angry. She’d already expected all sorts of things might go wrong and had made backups just in case. But she was deeply disappointed. Brian was her son she carried for ten months. She just couldn’t accept him always taking Kathleen’s side like this.
When the car pulled into the garage, Maxine opened her eyes and looked at Cleo. “I’m not leaving for the next few days. I’m taking Kathleen to court.
Now that Gabriel was arrested, there was no one left to cover for all the things Kathleen had done.
Cleo was all for it. “Sue her. I’ve wanted to do this for ages.”
Honestly, half of everything Maxine’s suffered was thanks to Kathleen.
To back her up, Cleo had even written an exposé about Kathleen’s actions, ready to publish as soon as Gabriel’s case went public.
Kathleen’s heart was in her throat the moment she got the notice from the court. Her first instinct was to reach out to Gabriel, but he’d already been taken away by the police.
With nowhere else to turn, she ended up calling Sebastian.
“Wait, Maxine’s suing you?” Sebastian sounded genuinely surprised.
Kathleen nodded on the other end, then realized he couldn’t see her and quickly said, “Yeah! It’s all my fault. I thought Maxine was just filing for divorce with you, so I accidentally told Brian. Brian took the evidence against Gabriel, and Maxine almost lost her case because of me.”
She left out anything about Gabriel, making herself sound like she was just trying to help.
“I don’t really know all the details yet. Sebastian, could you talk to Maxine for me? We’re all friends. I really don’t want to go to court with her,” Kathleen pleaded.
Back when Gabriel was around, she’d been so sure of herself that she never even thought about a backup plan. Now that the summons had arrived, it
was too late to run even if she wanted to.
She was convinced Maxine had more than enough evidence. If the truth came out, not only would her career be over, she might even get labeled as Gabriel’s accomplice.
Gabriel had his whole family backing him up. Kathleen had no one.
“Don’t worry just yet,” Sebastian reassured her. “I’ll see what I can find out for you.”
After hanging up on Kathleen, Sebastian didn’t call Maxine right away. Instead, he stared at his phone, lost in thought. Brian had alrea everything when he got home.
