Chapter 141
Chapter 141
For the younger Sebastian, it had been nothing short of a thunderclap on a clear day.
His newlywed wife–who’d promised just the day before to go out to dinner with him–had left him lying injured from a car crash… to go back to work
Kathleen gave him a bright smile as she tucked the blanket around him and said sweetly, “Alright, don’t think too much. Your only job now is to rest and
heal.”
And for the entire following week, Maxine didn’t come to visit. Not once. She didn’t even offer an explanation for her absence–just chatted with him as usual, like nothing had happened.
From that moment on, Sebastian’s heart began to cool. He slowly started pulling away from her.
Snapped out of his memories by the sound of Kathleen sobbing on the phone, Sebastian let out a long sigh. His voice was quiet when he finally spoke. “This is the last time.”
Consider it repaying a debt–for saving his life all those years ago.
Kathleen’s sobs morphed into grateful laughter. “Thank you. I knew it… I knew you still cared about me.”
After hanging up, Sebastian stared at the screen for a long time. Whatever kind of person Kathleen had been back then, nearly ten years had passed. People changed–and Kathleen was no exception.
With his support secured, Kathleen wasted no time. She immediately filed an appeal with the court. The second trial was scheduled for a week later. During this period, she was allowed to go home temporarily, with one condition: she wasn’t permitted to leave town by train or plane.
Maxine had no objections to Kathleen’s last–ditch struggle. In fact, she welcomed it. She prepared her materials meticulously, determined to make Kathleen rot in prison for a few more years during the retrial.
But just as the court date loomed, something unexpected happened–Gabriel lost his case. He was sentenced to ten years in prison. And then, one by one, people began to speak up online. Videos flooded the internet–people accusing Kathleen of bribery and colluding to stage sham trials.
One video featured a middle–aged woman standing before the camera, holding her ID and sobbing. “Kathleen did it for money. She worked with Gabriel. He raped my daughter. At first, he pretended to help us and said he’d take our case pro bono, but in court, he deliberately hid the evidence and helped
Gabriel win.”
Tears still streaming, she held up a few medical reports. “These were from my daughter’s exam. I gave them to Kathleen, but luckily I made copies. After we lost the case, her firm told me the verdict was irreversible–and that Kathleen had already destroyed the originals.”
The video went viral within hours, stirring up a wave of public outrage.
One user commented, “I remember another case Gabriel was involved in–another rape trial. The victim jumped into a river after she lost. It made the news. Kathleen was the attorney in that case too.”
The comment hit the top of the thread. Netizens with time on their hands dug deeper, pulling court records and even tracking down the victim, Ivanna’s,
old social media account.
Her final post–written on the day she took her life was filled with despair, void of any will to live. It devastated everyone who read it.
Someone eventually leaked Kathleen’s own account. Her photos were bombarded with comments cursing her, some even telling her to kill herself.
By the next morning, Kathleen didn’t even dare step outside her front door. Every time she peeked out, she felt like the whole world was pointing fingers, whispering behind her back.
In the end, she couldn’t take it anymore. She called Sebastian.
“Please… Help me one more time. Someone leaked my home address. I’m scared. I don’t know what they’ll do I need to get out of here..
