Chapter 186
The nurse’s offer seemed sincere, not like something prearranged. Maxine waved her hand and said, “Thanks, but no need. We’ll manage over there.”
She felt that it was better to keep the other rooms for patients who needed them more.
She returned to the ward to find Sebastian already asleep in bed.
Brian said proudly to her, “Mom, Dad has taken all his medicine! I made sure of it!”
Maxine finally smiled at him. “Alright, you should go to bed early, too. But remember to sleep at the other end, it would be awful if you caught it.”
Brian nodded, took off his shoes, and climbed onto the other end of the bed.
Maxine sat on the sofa, watching the father and son drift off to sleep. She pulled out her phone and texted Cleo. [I won’t be coming home tonight. You go ahead and get some rest. Just text me if anything comes up.]
Cleo replied promptly: [Got it.]
Maxine glanced at the sofa by the table near the door. It was surprisingly spacious. She tested it out, when she lay down, her feet could just reach the armrest. She thought, Well, at least the cushions are soft enough. Spending the night here, I probably won’t wake up sore all over.
After a long day’s work and a late–night drive, Maxine was so exhausted she could barely keep her eyes open. She had planned to check if Sebastian’s fever had subsided after the medicine, but she drifted off to sleep almost as soon as she lay down on the sofa.
But when she woke up, she was surprised to find herself lying in bed.

Looking at the situation in front of her, she thought, ‘Figures, he must’ve carried me to bed last night.‘
Maxine sat up in bed and called Brian to get up.
After helping him get ready, they made it just in time for the driver to arrive and take him to school.

So Brian could only wave goodbye reluctantly and said, “Mom, you must be here when I get home tonight! Don’t leave until we’ve said goodbye properly!”
Brian was scared that when he got back from school, Maxine would leave him again without a word.
Maxine nodded and waved back with a gentle smile.
About an hour earlier, the doctors had come in, run a full battery of tests on Sebastian, and handed Maxine a lab slip, instructing her to collect the results
in an hour.
Maxine took the lab slip and glanced at it. When she looked up, she found Sebastian already awake, staring at her with his eyes wide open.
Maxine started slightly but forced herself to stay calm. With practiced calmness, she asked, “You’re awake?”
Sebastian reached out his hand to prop himself up in bed. “Yeah,” he murmured, “did you bring me here last night?”
There was an indescribable look in his eyes, but Maxine said, “No, it wasn’t me. The butler brought you here last night. There were other things going on at home, so he asked me to come and take care of you for the time being.”
She really didn’t want anything more to do with the Mason family. Lately, Sebastian had been frantically investigating the Jenson family’s background, so much so that even Urban was shocked and demanded to know what was going on.

Sebastian said, a bit disappointed, “Oh, I see… Still, thanks for looking after me. Once I’m out of here, I’ll get you a gift, something you’ll definitely love.”
Maxine handed him the cup of water and said, “Just focus on getting better first.”
But when Maxine went downstairs to collect the test results, she ran into the last person she expected to see.
