During the lunch break, Maxine glanced at the thick stack of registration slips and medical records on the table. She gave a sympathetic look and said, “That must be tough.”
Lucas sighed deeply. “Not that tough… if you could help me sort out these medical records…”
Maxine said with a straight face, “Lucas, let’s talk about Gabriel instead.”
Lucas burst out laughing at her words. “Man, the Jenson family just won’t give up, will they?”
Lucas handed Maxine a contact. “Add him later, I’ll give him a heads–up first. Once he finds anything, he’ll reach out to you.”
Maxine nodded and added the contact on social media. To show her gratitude, she treated Lucas to dinner. By the time she returned to the hotel, it was already past 10 p.m.
The room was dark, Cleo must have already gone to bed. Maxine tiptoed in and quietly changed her clothes. But just as she was about to settle in, her phone suddenly rang in her pocket, the shrill ringtone piercing the silence of the room.
Startled, she fumbled frantically for her phone and quickly silenced it.
The call was from Brian. Maxine answered with a sigh, her voice low. “Didn’t I already tell you? I’m still busy. Just wait until the weekend to visit your dad at the hospital.”

Cleo frowned. “Why does everyone come running to you when they’re sick? You’re not a doctor. I’m going to see what’s really wrong with him!”
As she spoke, she turned to change her clothes, muttering to herself, “That scheming little brat just takes advantage of Maxine’s soft heart.”

The car pulled up in front of the Mason family mansion, where the butler was already waiting at the entrance. As soon as he saw them, he hurried forward and said, “Ms. Hudson, we truly appreciate you coming.”
Cleo had to bite her tongue, she just couldn’t bring herself to say anything snarky. The butler was simply too polite. If she’d actually spoken her mind, she’d have come off like a villain.
Brian lay in bed. At the sound, he barely managed to open one eye. When he saw Maxine, he whimpered pitifully, “Mommy, I feel awful.”
Maxine walked over and pressed her hand to his forehead, it was burning with fever. She wondered what he’d done atter coming back to end up this sick.
She sighed and gently gathered Brian into her arms. “Let’s get you to the hospital,” she said.

Cleo took Brian from Maxine with a huff. “Your hand’s still hurt, let me hold him,” she said, her tone less than friendly.
Brian glanced at Maxine’s hand, still wrapped in gauze, a constant reminder of the dangerous ordeal she had endured.
