Sebastian couldn’t shake the feeling that tonight’s smooth sailing was all thanks to these people. All those snacks and treats he’d been handing out over time had finally paid off.
Maxine leaned against the car window. She’d been fine inside the shop, but once she stepped outside and the cold wind hit her, her head started spinning. She wasn’t blackout drunk, but her judgment was definitely impaired.
Leaning against the window, Maxine already regretted what she’d just done.
She thought to herself, ‘I shouldn’t have responded to Sebastian at all, I’d already decided on divorce. Urban has done so much for me. He even helped me fake my death to flee abroad, spent tremendous effort and money helping me get established overseas, and painstakingly investigated my father’s
case.
‘I must not waste another second here with Sebastian.’
Thankfully, after getting in the car, Sebastian didn’t make any further moves. Maxine had no choice but to lean against the window and pretend to be asleep. The lingering warmth of his touch on her palm made her heart beat a little faster.
‘Once I uncover the truth behind my father’s death, I’ll leave this place for good. No turning back,’ Maxine vowed to herself.
Pretending to sleep, she leaned against the car window, lulled by the car’s gentle rocking motion. Before she knew it, exhaustion took over and she actually fell asleep. When she opened her eyes again, it was already the next day.
Maxine woke up to find herself lying in the master bedroom of the Mason mansion, dressed in the same loungewear she’d worn during her last visit.
Her phone was right beside her, thoughtfully fully charged. She unplugged it, grabbed the phone, and headed downstairs. The housekeeper spotted her and quickly greeted her, “Good morning, Ms. Hudson. Lunch is ready for you.”
She glanced at her phone, it was nearly noon, just as she’d expected.
The housekeeper set the served dishes on the table and said, “Mr. Mason has already left for the office. Before he left, he asked me to make sure you finish your meal before you go. And don’t worry, I was the one who helped you change into fresh clothes.”
Noticing Maxine’s hesitation, she quickly added the explanation, afraid she might misunderstand.
Maxine sat at the dining table, glancing around at the spread of homestyle dishes before her. “Where’s Brian?” she asked.
The housekeeper smiled and replied, “The butler took Mr. Masony to the hospital for a follow–up examination this morning. He should be back around this
time.”
No sooner had she finished speaking than the front door swung open. Brian burst in, his face lighting up as he spotted Maxine. “Mom!”
Maxine let out a soft sigh as she watched him settle beside her. “How’s your recovery going?”
Following close behind, the butler promptly informed, “The doctor confirmed today that Brian has fully recovered.”
“Alright,” Maxine said, watching the housekeeper place the chopsticks and bowl in front of Brian. “Since you’re all better, have a rest after lunch, then head back to school a bit earlier this afternoon.”
Brian felt his heart breaking. “I want to stay with Mom!”
Maxine looked at him. “You’ve already missed a lot of school because you’ve been sick.”
Brian remained silent, just gazing at her with tearful eyes. Maxine took a deep breath and said, “Don’t think those puppy eyes will soften me up. No more skipping school. I know your father considered sending you abroad for studies, but at least finish your basic schooling first.”
Brian sniffled and nodded pitifully. Then he heard Maxine go on, “Besides, the education system here is excellent. I’ll talk to your father about it. You can

Though Brian couldn’t quite follow everything she said, one thing hit him. He thought, ‘She’s about to start watching my grades like a houer
