Brian thought she was angry and quickly grabbed her arm, pleading, “Mom, don’t be mad! I’ll be good!”
Maxine sighed. “It’s okay, I just got carried away. Once you finish middle school, whether you want to study abroad or stay here, it’ll be your call*
She reached out and gently stroked Brian’s head. “I never had a choice before, but you do. All I want is for you to be a wise, honest, and kind hearted
person.”
After dinner, Brian obediently headed upstairs to rest, while Maxine rose and quietly left the Mason family.
After everything that had happened, she threw herself into investigating her father’s case. She tracked down the address of the now defunct law firm and went there personally to search for clues.
There were tens of thousands of case files of all sizes piled up inside. Maxine and two others spent an entire week combing through them before finally locating Micah’s case file.
The file contained the lawyer’s profile. To her surprise, Maxine discovered he had previously worked in the Jenson Group’s legal department, but for some unknown reason, he abruptly resigned before joining this firm.
While Maxine was searching online for information about the law firm, she was startled to discover that, shortly after her father passed away, a student intern from the law society of the University of Political Science and Law had joined the firm, and that intern turned out to be Kathleen.
She came across a post on a university website from over a decade ago, announcing a collaboration between the law firm and the university’s law society. Kathleen had interned there as an honors student.
“Kathleen… of course it’s her,” Maxine muttered through gritted teeth.
After some deliberation, Maxine decided to call Sebastian. As Kathleen’s former “best friend,” having him help would be the most convenient and thorough way to get the information she needed.
Sebastian didn’t refuse her request. Without asking why, he promptly sent her Kathleen’s personnel file from the company archives.
Maxine frowned as she read through the file. ‘Seriously? No matter how big or small the case, every company Kathleen ever handled legal affairs for ended up bankrupt and liquidated. Every single one,‘ she thought to herself.
Maxine was so exasperated she almost had to laugh. ‘Kathleen is like a walking disaster. Whoever she represents is doomed to lose, first paying out a fortune, then going bankrupt. With a reputation like that, it’s no wonder she finally sought refuge with Sebastian and ended up as legal counsel at the Noxen Group’s law firm,‘ Maxine thought wryly.
Carrying the documents she had gathered, Maxine returned to the hotel. The moment Cleo saw her come in, she sprang up from her seat, her face alight with excitement. “You won’t believe what I’ve uncovered!” Cleo exclaimed.
Before Maxine could respond, Cleo excitedly pulled out several photocopied sheets from behind her back. “I’ve found evidence of contact between the Jenson family and Kathleen!”
Cleo handed the documents to Maxine, grinning. “Here’s the kicker, who would’ve thought Kathleen was such a meticulous bookkeeper? These records clearly show all the hefty payments she’s received over the years.”
After Kathleen was imprisoned, the place she had been living in was left vacant. Since Sebastian had helped her rent it, the landlord didn’t dare reclaim it
n that it escaped their right away, so it remained empty. The police did search the place when they arrested her, but the ledger was so well‘
detection.
Cleo took her colleagues into the room and, drawing on their years of investigative experience, they located a hollow panel in the wall. After peeling away the outermost layer of wallpaper, they discovered the ledger concealed within.
