Chapter 213
Actually, his guess was pretty much spot on, that is, unless Brian didn’t encounter those two men.
Seeing the hotel room door wide open, the bodyguard instantly sensed trouble. He rushed down the stairs, only to be met with the chaotic scene in the lobby.
The bodyguard instinctively knew he’d screwed up the job, and Maxine’s attitude just confirmed it.
The officer keenly picked up on the mention of another person in their conversation and asked, “Who is this Mr. Mason?”
Maxine took a deep breath. “He’s Brian’s biological father.”
The female officer instinctively glanced at her colleague, her mind racing with dramatic scenarios, Clearing her throat, she said, “I see. Would it be possible for you to contact the child’s father? Given the seriousness of the situation, having another person here to help brainstorm solutions could be beneficial.”
Maxine had remained unnaturally calm throughout the ordeal. The police were concerned she might be suppressing her emotions, so they thought it best for someone to stay with her, in case she broke down or did something drastic out of emotional distress.
Sebastian rushed over upon hearing the news. The bodyguard responsible for bringing Brian stood frozen in fear, head bowed as he recounted what had happened.
Sebastian had already figured out who was behind this. He waved the bodyguard off and said, “Hold that thought. Our priority now is rescuing Brian first.”
Even if they got through this, the Jenson family just wouldn’t stop hounding them. It was only a matter of time before something bad happened.
Based on their account, it’s likely that Brian sneaked upstairs to look for Maxine, discovered something, and then deliberately drew attention to himself to protect her.
After all, all that mattered to the Jenson family was the evidence Maxine had.
Sebastian looked at the hotel manager standing nearby with his head bowed and demanded, “Where’s the surveillance footage?”
The hotel manager, drenched in sweat, was about to explain, when the officer interjected, “All the hotel cameras mysteriously shut down during the incident. As for the security guard on duty at the time…”
He paused briefly, shooting the manager a dissatisfied look. “The security guard has already fled. Since he was just a contract worker, we don’t have much information on him yet. But rest assured, we’ve set up a special task force, someone will be assigned to track him down.”
Sebastian nodded to the officers. “We’re counting on you.”
After saying that, Sebastian walked up to Maxine and stopped in front of her. He took in her disheveled hair and the blanket draped haphazardly over her shoulders, which didn’t seem to offer much warmth. She sat shivering uncontrollably on the sofa, whether from fear or the cold, it was hard to say.
Sebastian reached out and gently stroked her hair. “Do you want to go rest for a bit?” he asked softly.
Sebastian’s gentle question was the last straw. Maxine’s composure shattered. She tried to speak, but only managed a choked sob. “I…”
She didn’t want to appear so vulnerable in front of Sebastian. Swallowing back her tears with effort, she took a deep breath and forced her voice to sound steady. “No, I can’t. Brian’s been kidnapped, how could I possibly rest?”
Sebastian kneeled down in front of her, looking up into her eyes with gentle concern. “Even if you won’t rest, at least change into warmer clothes. How can you help us search for Brian if you catch a cold?”
Her clothes were indeed ill–suited for the cold, so she could only nod reluctantly. Sebastian gently helped her up, then turned to the officers nearby and said, “Thank you for your concern. We’ll head to the police station after we’ve gotten ourselves together to assist with the investigation.”
