Chapter 37
On the other hand, Maxine shut off her phone with growing impatience and went back into the kitchen to finish making a late night search for Jonela
But barely ten minutes later, someone started banging on the front door.
Maxine turned the stove to low and walked over to the entrance, opening the door without
any
guard,
“Sebastian? What are you doing here?” Maxine snapped, already starting to close the door when Sebastian raised his hand and blocked it
There was no way Maxine’s strength could match his. She let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh. “What, you planning to break into my house now?”
The noise startled Jessica. She peeked out, and her little face instantly turned pale.
But without any hesitation, Jessica ran over and threw herself in front of Maxine.
“What are you doing here? Maxine’s divorcing you!” Jessica frowned and glared at Sebastian, clearly upset.
Sebastian’s eyes darkened as he glanced down at the little girl. Then he looked straight at Maxine. “Maxine, this is important. It’s about that little gi
Maxine’s eyes narrowed in suspicion. After a long pause, she finally let go of the doorknob and hesitantly stepped aside to let him in.
The moment Sebastian stepped inside, the smell hit him–rich, familiar.
Tomato basil soup. Maxine’s specialty.
Suddenly, it triggered a memory–Brian’s little face, clearly thinner than before. Sebastian’s eyes clouded even more.
His gaze shifted to Jessica’s smooth cheeks. She looked a bit healthier than the last time he saw her. A sudden wave of anger rose out of nowhere.
Rarely did Sebastian lose his temper like this. Without thinking, he blurted, “So you’re ignoring your own kid to play mom to someone else’s?”
Maxine’s expression turned ice cold. She looked like she was about to slap him and snapped, “This is what you meant by something important about
Jessica?”
With that, Maxine lowered her head and gently touched Jessica’s hair. “Sweetheart, go back to your room.
Jessica kept a wary eye on Sebastian for a moment before finally walking off, glancing back at every step.
Maxine walked to the door and said coldly, “Mr. Mason, if you didn’t come here for something real, you’d better get out. This isn’t the place to dump your
bad mood.”
Sebastian shut his eyes and took a deep breath. “Sorry. I lost my head for a second,”

Maxine wasn’t used to seeing him like this. Whether it was the outburst or the apology–it was rare.
Therefore, it threw Maxine off for a second.
Maxine pressed her lips together, a little flustered. “Fine, whatever. Just leave. Whether you’ve got something toy or not, don’t come again–unless it’s about the divorce.”
The word divorce hit Sebastian like a needle straight to the chest. The pain shot through him, sharp and unshakable.
Sebastian looked down, voice low. “This really is important. I talked to Valerie today. She brought some news–word’s out that you’re planning to adopt
Jessica.
“We don’t know how, but no one’s made it a public issue yet. But it’s serious. If Valerie knows, it’s only a matter of time before Gabriel hears about it too.”

Maxine’s pupils tightened. She wasn’t stupid she knew what that meant.
Ivanna’s former defense attorney, now trying to adopt her orphaned daughter?,
If Gabriel found out that the case he worked so hard to bury might get dragged back into court again, he’d definitely react fast.
Not that Maxine was scared. But right now,
she had almost no solid evidence.
‘Everything has to move faster now,‘ Maxine thought.
