Maxine raised an eyebrow and scoffed. “Do you even understand? If you did, you’d know what marital property means! Even if you’ve never been married, you should know that dividing assets in a divorce is between the couple. What does it have to do with you?”
Maxine paused, her eyes full of ridicule. “Even if you’re with Sebastian, as long as we haven’t divorced, your status is no different from a mistress,”
Instantly, Kathleen’s face turned crimson. She pointed at Maxine angrily. “Who are you calling a mistress?”
Maxine laughed coldly. “Whoever’s offended is who I’m talking about. Il‘ you’re not, why are you so upset?”
Kathleen was speechless, turning to Sebastian with tears in her eyes. “Sebastian, I came with you today to help reconcile, not to be insulted!”
Sebastian looked at Maxine sharply. “Maxine, watch your words. Don’t make false accusations! As a lawyer, you should know slander has legal consequences.”
Maxine replied, “I’m slandering? Sebastian, do you want to argue this point? Fine, go ahead. Once I gather evidence, we’ll see each other in court.”
Then Maxine retrieved the divorce papers and walked to the door, opening it. “Alright, you two can leave now. If you stay any longer, I’ll report you for trespassing. Then it won’t just be a divorce case.”
Sebastian’s anger seemed to boil over. He gritted his teeth. “Maxine, are you saying there’s something improper between Kathleen and me? Fine, tell me exactly when-”
Maxine spoke calmly. “Last year on my birthday, before I blew out the candles, you left to pick her up from work; this hristmas, while families were together, you were out shopping with her; and that heating pad–you gave it to her.”
These words caused Sebastian’s expression to shift from anger to confusion..
Maxine continued, “The first two, I can chalk up helping a friend–but Sebastian, let me ask you: if I gave an inappropriate gift to a single male friend, how would you feel?”
Sebastian remained silent, staring at Maxine with a puzzled look.
After a while, Sebastian tried to speak, but Maxine raised her hand, stopping him. “Enough, Sebastian. No need to say more.
“I don’t care if you two are really involved. I won’t bother collecting evidence to sue you–I don’t have the time.
“Keep the agreement. If you agree, transfer the money. If not, text me your acceptable terms. We can negotiate.”
With that, Maxine lowered her gaze, her voice soft but weary. “I’m tired of this. Stop disgusting me.”
Sebastian’s eyes widened slightly. He opened his mouth but couldn’t find the words.
Maxine noticed his hesitation, her impatience growing. “Still not leaving-”
“I’m not leaving!” A young, angry voice rang out. Maxine looked toward the door in surprise.
Brian stepped out from the hallway, glaring at Maxine.
Maxine tightened her grip on the doorknob. After a moment, she asked coldly, “Brian, why
“Why can’t I be here? Isn’t this my home?” Brian’s voice was sharp, his gaze toward Maxine filled with hostility.

Maxine met his eyes coldly. She no longer felt pain for this child, only a sense of injustice.
Suppressing the ache in her chest, Maxine avoided looking at Brian. She said, “This is between your father and me. Stay out of it. Go home.”
“I’m not going! I want to see how heartless you can be!” Brian shouted.
