Chapter 70
Maxine almost laughed in disbelief. “Mr. Robinson, are you kidding me?”
89%
Her gaze hardened. “Given my seniority here, not asking for compensation is already me being polite. I won’t even get into how my cases were randomly reassigned. And now you’re trying to pin this on me, huh?”
Rayden kept his smile. “Relax, okay? Those are two different things. Your case load is one matter, and your resignation is another. No one’s saying we’re firing you, right?”
Maxine let out a cold chuckle. “Go ahead and fire me. That way you’ll have to pay me what I’m owed–and I’ll give you plenty of time to do the math.”
Rayden sighed, “Maxine, don’t make this difficult. Look, Patrick gave me clear instructions before he left. He said if you came in to resign, we had to follow standard procedures. Your file’s still active in our system. As long as it stays that way. you’re technically still employed.”
His expression shifted slightly, and he said with a half–smile, “You do realize this could affect your plan to get hired somewhere else, right?”
Maxine raised an eyebrow, her voice turning cold. “Are you trying to threaten me?”
“Oh, I wouldn’t dare. I’m just the deputy director. I can’t override Patrick. I’m just following protocol. Best to wait for Patrick to get back and talk to him yourself,” said Rayden.
Looking at Rayden’s smug smile, Maxine felt a wave of frustration she had nowhere to put. Patrick was supposed to be on a fifteen–day vacation–this was just day one.
She stood up and stormed out. Outside the office, she called Patrick. The phone was off.
Maxine stared at the screen, stunned. It was almost laughable.
It was clear now–Patrick’s vacation wasn’t just a coincidence.
She thought back to what Patrick had said during her last visit and could only shake her head at the irony.
Back in her car, after weighing her options, Maxine drove to the Mason Group.
Mason Group headquarters was a Gludon City landmark–38 stories tall, with 20 floors dedicated to the company’s
operations.
Maxine had been here plenty of times before as Sebastian’s wife. But this was her first time coming for something else.
The receptionist looked startled to see her and hesitated before offering a polite smile. “Mrs. Mason, welcome! Are you here to see Mr. Mason? I’ll let him know right away.”
“No need. I’ll head up myself,” Maxine said as she walked past the front desk.
The receptionist quickly stepped in front of her, smiling nervously. “Um, maybe I should call first? Please wait in the lounge -it won’t take long
Maxine stopped and looked at the receptionist without expression. “Sebastian and I aren’t divorced yet. I need an appointment to see my husband, huh?”
The receptionist’s face went pale. “No, no, that’s not what I meant. It’s just that Mr. Mason is in a meeting with foreign clients. It hasn’t wrapped up yet, so I thought-”
Maxine didn’t respond. She just kept walking straight toward the security gate.

Realizing she couldn’t stop Maxine, the receptionist grabbed the phone and quickly called Sebastian’s assistant, Charles, “Mrs. Mason’s coming upstairs. I couldn’t stop her. Please do something!”
On the other end, Charles froze. He hung up and rushed to the CEO’s office. He didn’t even knock. “Mr. Mason, Mrs. Mason’s on her way up.”
