Urban let out a laugh, half amused, half exasperated. “You do realize everyone saw you come in with me tonight, right? Bit late to say it’s inappropriate now, don’t you think?”
Maxine couldn’t be bothered to explain. Arriving together and leaving together were two completely different things.
“Anyway, Mr. Soto, you can go ahead. I’ve already called my friend. She’ll be here soon.” Maxine made it clear she was done with the conversation. “If there’s anything work–related, just contact me later.”
Urban just scoffed and got out of the car.
Maxine’s expression shifted, and she instinctively took a step back.
Urban leaned against the car, looking completely at ease. “You think I’m going to bite? Why so nervous, Mrs. Mason?”
Maxine glanced over her shoulder. Quite a few guests were already making their way out of the venue.
She tensed up even more, putting extra distance between herself and Urban.
“Worried your husband will find out you were with me tonight?” Urban raised an eyebrow, his tone turning playful. “Aren’t you two getting divorced anyway?”
Maxine had no idea what had gotten into him. She opened her mouth to respond, but before she could say a word, a cold, all–too–familiar male voice sounded from behind her. “What are you two up to?”
Hearing that voice, Maxine closed her eyes for a moment and let out a quiet breath.
Urban glanced over, then gave a faint, ambiguous smile. “What a coincidence. Mr. Mason, you’re here too?”
Maxine turned around and saw Sebastian slowly step out from the shadows.
He was still in his riding gear, which made him look even taller and leaner. His dark eyes were unreadable as he studied Urban for a moment, then shifted his gaze to Maxine.
Sebastian’s tone was even colder than before. “Yeah, what a coincidence. I really didn’t expect to see you here too, Maxine.”
Maxine lowered her eyes, letting out a silent sigh of resignation.
“I was invited to the party with Mr. Soto,” Maxine admitted honestly. “What about you? Why are you here?”
Sebastian stared straight at her and shot back, “Why shouldn’t I be here?”
Urban regained his usual warm smile and said, “It seems that Mr. Mason and Mrs. Mason have something to discuss. Mrs. Mason, I’ll wait for you in the car.
With that, Urban turned to leave, but after a couple of steps, he turned back and, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, gently adjusted Maxine’s slipping shawl. “It gets windy at night. Don’t catch a cold.”
That casual yet intimate gesture made a flash of cold anger flicker in Sebastian’s eyes.
Guests who’d thought about coming over to say hello now kept their distance, giving Maxine and Sebastian a wide berth.
Maxine swallowed her irritation at Urban and tried to smooth things over, asking Sebastian, “I heard Brian came with you. Where is he?”
Sebastian just kept staring at her, saying nothing.

The tension was unbearable. Maxine finally lowered her voice and said, “Sebastian, don’t get the wrong idea. There’s nothing between me and Urban, we’re just…”
Halfway through her sentence, Maxine paused, realizing it wasn’t worth it.
She thought, ‘Why do I owe Sebastian any explanation?
“There is nothing between me and Urban to begin with–and even if there was, it had nothing to do with Sebastian‘
She bit back her words and said coolly, “I’m leaving now. Have fun.”
As soon as she finished, Maxine turned to go, but Sebastian suddenly grabbed her wrist.
With just a little force, Sebastian yanked her right in front of him.
His breath, hot and laced with anger, seemed to wrap around her, making the air feel heavy.
Sebastian spoke through clenched teeth, practically spitting out the words as he questioned her. “Maxine, is this why you’re so determined to divorce me? Is it because of him? When did you two start sneaking around?”
