Chapter 84
Every single problem Maxine’d faced so far was thanks to Sebastian, and now he actually had the nerve to say that to her.
The line went dead. Maxine didn’t even hesitate to hang up. There was nothing left to say to Sebastian. The sooner she wrapped things up, the sooner she could get the divorce. She felt that he and Brian had probably been waiting for this freedom for ages.
Jessica carefully tiptoed over, tugged at her sleeve, and offered her a piece of candy. “Maxine, don’t be sad. I will give you my favorite candy.”
Maxine scooped her up and kissed her soft cheek. “Thank you, Jessica! Let’s get some rest. Tomorrow, I will take you out to have some fun!”
If her resignation still wasn’t approved after the weekend, she’d just go straight to Mason Group’s HR herself.
Sure enough, on Sunday night, while Maxine was walking home with Jessica, she got a message from Rayden Robinson.
Her resignation had been rejected. She couldn’t leave until she finished handing over her work.
Maxine scoffed at the message. The only case she had left was Urban’s, which had nothing to do with Mason Group.
The next day, Maxine headed straight for Rayden’s office, only to be told he was away on a business trip. For now, Olivia Goodwin from the admin was in charge.
She hadn’t really interacted with Olivia before, but she’d always had a good reputation around the office.
Maxine hadn’t been back to work in ages, so her sudden appearance drew plenty of attention. But when everyone saw her go straight to Olivia, no one dared to ask what was going on.
Once Olivia understood why Maxine was there, she set down her files, looked up, and said, “This isn’t the best place to talk. Let’s find somewhere more private.”
Maxine nodded. The office really wasn’t the best place to have this kind of conversation.
They grabbed a table at the café downstairs. Olivia took a sip of her coffee and got straight to the point: “Without Mr. Mason’s approval, Rayden wouldn’t dare process your resignation on his own.”
Maxine thought, ‘Talking to smart people is always so much easier.
Olivia didn’t beat around the bush. “If those two don’t sign off, it doesn’t matter who else you ask, Ms. Hudson.”
Rayden only went on that last–minute business trip because of this. The Anatar case wasn’t even his responsibility, but after he messaged Maxine last night and realized she’d come looking for him, he just took off.
When Olivia mentioned Rayden, her face was full of sarcasm.
Maxine thought, ‘Figures it’s Sebastian again. He was the one who picked Kathleen back then, and now he’s holding up my resignation just to mess with me. What a piece of work!
Seeing the obvious disgust on Maxine’s face, Olivia cleared her throat. “I think you still need to talk to Mr. Mason.”
Sebastian’s situation wasn’t exactly an open secret at the company, but word had definitely gotten around. Olivia wasn’t stupid. She might look down on Rayden, but she could see why he did what he did.
He just didn’t want to get on anyone’s bad side, so he found an excuse to step back and let someone else take the fall.
Maxine understood what she was getting at and couldn’t help but let out a laugh, half annoyed, half amused.

If they kept stalling her resignation paperwork, she’d just wait out the thirty days and go to labor arbitration. It was only a matter of time.
Maxine looked at Olivia and said, “Thanks for letting me know.”
After all, Olivia was just another employee trying to get by. Maxine understood, and she didn’t want her own issues with Sebastian to drag innocent people into the mess.
Olivia left quickly. As Maxine picked up her bag to leave, her phone rang. It was Urban calling.
