Maxine’s coworker could tell from her expression that she hadn’t been listening at all, and let out a helpless sigh.
She walked over to Jessica, and like a magician, pulled a box of chocolates out of her pocket. They were originally meant for her son, but now she’d have to give them to Jessica instead.
She said, “Jessica, you’re such a good girl. Be sure to listen to Maxine, okay? Next time you’re on break, I’ll have her bring you over to play again.”
Jessica took the chocolates with both hands, thanked her politely, and then sweetly grabbed Maxine’s hand.
For the next several days, Maxine barely left the house except to drop Jessica off and pick her up from school. Most of her time was spent at home, digging into the criminal code and going over all the evidence she’d managed to collect so far.
She’d thought about going back to Ivanna’s place, but it just wasn’t safe anymore. Gabriel’s people were probably watching the place, and she couldn’t risk it, not with Jessica to worry about.
Kathleen stared intently at the screen, her face suddenly turning ashen.
Just a moment ago, while she was getting water in the break room, she’d overheard some coworkers talking about how Maxine had come by the office over the weekend, apparently to sort through her things and start the resignation process.
When Kathleen heard that, she’d just smirked to herself and thought, ‘So what if she was the firm’s star lawyer? In the end, she’s still getting kicked out like that!
As Kathleen set her cup with the espresso shot under the hot water tap, it suddenly hit her. Maxine had already come by before and taken all her important files. There was only some useless junk left on her desk.
She thought, ‘So what did she come back for this time?‘
A wave of panic washed over Kathleen. Her hand jerked back instinctively, and hot water splashed onto her skin, making her yelp in pain.
Ignoring her coworkers‘ concerned questions, Kathleen set down her cup and rushed straight to the office.
Everyone was out on break, so Kathleen glanced over at the computer Maxine used to work on, tucked away in the back.
She took a deep breath, walked over to Maxine’s desk, and turned on the computer.
Maxine had already wiped all her files, and of course, she hadn’t bothered to lock the computer.
Kathleen’s eyelid twitched hard. There was no need to check further. Maxine must had found something.
If Gabriel was exposed, it wouldn’t be long before she got dragged in too. She hadn’t even married into the Mason family yet. There was no way she would let Gabriel pull her down with him.
“Hey, Kathleen, what are you doing at Maxine’s desk?” a colleague asked, sounding curious.
Kathleen managed a strained smile. “I’m still missing a few things from that last case, so I wanted to see if Maxine might have them here.”
The colleague chuckled. “Maxine probably cleared everything out last time she was here. If you need anything, you’d better ask her soon. I heard she’s going abroad soon. Might be hard to get in touch with her after that.”
Kathleen’s heart skipped a beat. “Do you know where she’s planning to go?”
The colleague shook their head. “She just mentioned it once. I didn’t really ask.”

Kathleen made up an excuse to slip out of the office and dialed the number she knew by heart.
It took two tries before Gabriel finally picked up, his voice full of impatience. “This better actually be important.”
Kathleen could hear the noise and chatter in the background. With everything that happened with Ivanna, Gabriel’s family must have warned him, and he hadn’t been going out much lately. So he was probably throwing a party at home right now.
She lowered her voice. “Seriously? You’re still partying at a time like this? Do you have any idea that Maxine might already know about you and your little secrets?”
There was a brief pause. Gabriel said a few words to the people around him, then moved somewhere quieter.
He said, “Tell me everything you know. Now.”
