Sebastian frowned. “Don’t be so reckless, Maxine. You know how dangerous things got today. If I hadn’t happened to be passing by, do you even realize what could’ve happened?”
Maxine just replied, “Yeah, I know.”
Her tone was light and careless, like she didn’t really care about what had just happened.
Sebastian was about to say more, but Maxine suddenly asked, “Do you know if Gabriel and Kathleen have been in touch privately?”
Hearing Kathleen’s name, Sebastian sounded a bit exasperated. “Maxine, there are things you just don’t get. Kathleen and I are just friends. Can you please stop making a fuss about this?”
Kathleen was Ivanna’s lawyer.. He felt that she would not have anything to do with Gabriel.
Maxine glanced at him, let out a cold laugh, and straightened her collar, which had gotten a little messy from running earlier. “Think whatever you want. I’m only saying this because you saved me today. If you think Kathleen’s so amazing, then go be with her.”
Charles was practically sweating bullets on the sidelines. Maxine had no idea that the only reason Sebastian showed up today was just to sneak a peek at her.
Of course, someone as proud as Sebastian would never use the word “sneak.” But he did say things like, “Park the car somewhere out of sight. Don’t let her notice.”
“Thanks for today. I still have to pick up Jessica, so I’ll treat you to dinner next time.” With that, Maxine was ready to leave.
But Sebastian called after her, “I actually have a meeting nearby in a bit. I can
give you two a ride.”
Charles had to look away, unable to watch. One of them was headed to the south side, the other to the north. He just couldn’t see how that was on the way.
Maxine was about to turn him down, but Charles chimed in, “The cops already checked the scene and had both cars towed. I also got our logistics team to call the insurance company, so you can just handle the claim directly. The dealership will fix your car, but it’ll probably take about a week.”
Maxine rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on. It was already past six, and Jessica had been out of school for over an hour. Even though she’d already called the teacher, she still worried she might be scared.
“Let’s go,” Sebastian said as he headed out, “We’re still married until the divorce is final. You don’t have to avoid me like I’m a
stranger.”
H
hoice, Maxine followed after him.
ave himself a silent thumbs–up.
He’d definitely caught the look Sebastian gave him before leaving. He felt tat the year–end bonus was as good as his.
Maxine slid into the car, pulled out her phone, and saw a message from Cleo. [You will not believe what my coworker just saw!]
Back when Maxine had just gotten into the police car, she’d been too rattled to reply, but Cleo didn’t let up and fired off another message. [I just bumped into Kathleen. She bought a cartoon cake, had this super sneaky grin, and hopped into a cab.]
Maxine couldn’t help but laugh at her description and texted back: [Can you stop making up all these weird details?]

Cleo sent a snarky emoji. [Come on, it’s obvious. She’s totally using Brian as an excuse to go to the Mason family, but what she really wants is to talk to Sebastian!]
Maxine let out a sigh, which made Sebastian glance over at her.
Completely clueless, Maxine shot back: [Well, she’s in for a letdown. Sebastian’s sitting right next to me.]
Right then, Sebastian suddenly spoke up beside her, “When you were giving your statement, the cops showed me that lunatic’s info.”
