Chapter 98
Maxine set her phone down and turned to look at him.
Sebastian said, “That guy doesn’t have any history of mental illness, but he does have a record of drug use.”
In other words, either he was high and Maxine just had the bad luck to run into him, or someone sent him after her on
purpose.
If it was the second scenario, Maxine caught on right away.

If Sebastian hadn’t happened to show up today, that man’s knife would’ve ended up in her. All he’d have to do was claim he was high or had some kind of drug–induced psychosis, and the court would go easy on him. He’d take the money from whoever was behind it and live out the rest of his life without a care.
Maxine let out a cold laugh. “That’s a pretty sweet deal for him, isn’t it?”
Sebastian frowned, clearly not happy to hear her say that. “What exactly happened?”
Honestly, he didn’t buy that it was just a coincidence. The cops checked his address. The man usually hung out in the suburbs, so no one knew why he drove all the way there that day. Even the car he was driving wasn’t his. Nobody knew where he stole it from. The police have already opened a case.
Maxine was silent for a moment before she finally said, “I’ve found new evidence on Gabriel. I have to get justice for Ivanna.”
“Maxine!” Sebastian called out, his voice full of emotion.
He took a deep breath, forcing down his anger, and said in a low voice, “Gabriel is mad. You don’t have to go head–to–head with him. If you want, I…”
“This is my own business,” Maxine cut him off. “If Gabriel hired someone to kill me, that just proves I’m on the right track. I’m going to take him down myself.”
“Do you even know what you’re getting into with the Jenson family? Gabriel isn’t someone you can just mess with,” Sebastian shot back without thinking.
Maxine’s face was cold as she gripped her phone so tightly her knuckles turned white. She looked at him and sneered, “So I don’t know? But Kathleen does?”
Thinking about it, if Sebastian hadn’t turned a blind eye back then, Kathleen wouldn’t have dared destroy the evidence in Ivanna’s case.
“Kathleen has nothing to do with this,” Sebastian explained.
Maxine let out a cold laugh. “You sure sound close by calling her like that.”
Seeing that she didn’t want to talk to him anymore, Sebastian felt a headache coming on, and his tone grew sharper. “I know a thing or two about Gabriel. The court already gave a verdict. Why can’t you just let it go?”
Maxine was clearly risking everything.
Just thinking about it made Maxine furious. If Kathleen hadn’t destroyed that evidence back then, she wouldn’t be struggling so much now. Looking back, it was obvious she did it on purpose. Gabriel told Kathleen to get rid of anything that could hurt him.
All because they were part of the Jenson family, they tore apart a family that deserved happiness and still managed to walk away scot–free.

Maxine’s voice was cold. “If you’re worried that Gabriel’s disgusting secrets coming out will drag Kathleen down with him, you can forget it. Gabriel’s going down, and Kathleen won’t get away either.”
Sensing the tension in the air, Charles pulled the car over and quietly interrupted, “Mr. Mason, we’ve arrived.”
Maxine stepped out of the car. Jessica, who was playing in the yard with her teacher, spotted her right away and dashed over, throwing her arms around her. “Maxine!”
Maxine gently patted her head. “Sorry, sweetie, I am late today.”
Jessica shook her head. “It’s okay! You have your own things to do! I’m a big girl now!”

With Jessica in her arms, Maxine thanked the teacher. As she turned around, she saw Sebastian had also gotten out of the car and was now standing right behind her.
