Chapter 39 One Last Time, Will You Come?

“Where are you going?”

I scowled when I asked him that, but Lukas‘ only response was, “The old man is summoning me. I have to fly out. There’s nothing to be done about it, and who knows when he’ll let me come back?”
Just then. Stefan walked out of the room, so I hurriedly shut up and washed myself up so I could leave for work.
After Lukas was gone, Stefan became even busier. He would usually be out working for the whole day. Most of the time, he would return home later than I did.
Working hard with him was also his assistant and the few other men he brought along.
I clocked off earlier. Thus, I would help get dinner ready. This way, they could easily have food as soon as they were back
However, I never dined with them, and after that night, I felt there was something weird about his relationship with his assistant. Hence, I avoided them whenever I could.
According to Stefan, they would only be here for half a month. Time quickly flew by, and even I could tell that they were starting to wrap up their work.
For some reason, that made me anxious.
Would my heart have died long ago if he did not come to me?
As I was cooking. Stefan’s assistant walked into the kitchen. “We’ll be heading back to Grimsdale tomorrow.”
My hands froze imperceptibly around the vegetables I was washing. “Oh, well, safe travels.”
She smiled. “Aren’t you coming with us? Do you really plan to stay here for the rest of your life? The project in this city would only last about a year or so, and it is quite a big project. If Mr. Jablonsky is busy, he will likely never return to this place.”
I thought nothing of her words. “I do not plan to head back just yet. It is quite a feat for him to come along for such a project. I know he would very likely never return.”
“Miss Sutton,” she said, somewhat exasperated. “You have lived there for nearly twenty years. Can you really get used to suddenly changing it up, to the people around you and the situation?”
I pursed my lips. “I am familiar with this place; I was born here.
She did not say another word, but I could sense that she was trying to get me to go back to Grimsdale.
I did not know whether it was her idea or Stefan’s, but based on what I knew of him, he would not use such implicit persuasion methods, right?
Once more, I could not sleep that night.
With the lights turned off, the bright moonlight streamed in through the window and the trees outside, casting speckled shadows in my room. Nevertheless, I still could not fall asleep.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed. It was a message, abruptly disturbing the stillness of the night.
Thinking it was a message from Yoana, I tapped into it. To my surprise, it was from Stefan.
I was stunned. Had he finally unblocked me?
The message consisted of only a few simple words with not a single punctuation in sight, but what he wrote shocked me to

Chapter 39 One Last Time, Will You Come?
It took me at least ten minutes before I could reply to his text. ‘No. Going back has no meaning for me!
Indeed, there was no meaning in returning to that place.
I left because I wanted that absurd time to end. Why would I head back?
Anyway, I had already planned on leaving after he did. This city was honestly not a place I wanted to stay in.
It was a huge world out there. Surely, there was a place for me somewhere.
When I woke up the next morning and got ready, Stefan’s men were all ready to leave.

I was distracted as I brushed my teeth while glancing out the window occasionally. I thought he would be in the car by now, but I was surprised to see him walk out of his room.
I guiltily looked away from the window and nonchalantly greeted him. “Are you leaving? Safe travels,”
He walked over to me. “One last time; will you come with me?”
