He squeezed into the room and shoved everyone away. He pulled me away from the sink and angrily asked, “How did this happen?”
Wendy held my ice–cold hands. She was blaming herself, and she said, “That hit took me out for quite a while, but I told your brother everything. I should’ve woken up sooner. We could’ve found you before all this happened.”
I smiled, but I knew I must be paler than a ghost. Even so, I consoled them. Slowly, I said, “I’m alright. Hey, I’m not dead yet. It’ll be fine. I just need to rest up.” Speaking of rest, sleep was starting to claim me. I just wanted to hit the hay.
Annabelle was staring at Gregory, her eyes wide. She didn’t understand how Gregory could know me. To her, I was someone with no money or background. Gregory shouldn’t be so concerned about me.
She then looked at Zacharias, giving him a look that demanded answers. Quietly, she asked, “What’s going on? I thought he was your brother. Why is he worried about Horatio instead? Even if he’s trying to act like you’re a stranger, this is taking it too far. I’m your fiancee, not the next -door neighbor!”
Zacharias was white down to his lips. He tried to say something, but not a word came out of his mouth. He knew a reckoning was coming, so he stepped back and tried to run.
Gregory roared, “Stop him! Take him, Annabelle, and the bodyguard captain! Keep them in captivity! No one’s leaving until Horatio wakes up and tells us the whole story!”
Oh, good. I could finally get some sleep. Before that, I said, “Thank you.” That was for Wendy. I gave Gregory a thumbs–up.
I woke up in bed. Specifically, I was in my family’s mansion. My family was standing around me, concerned. I saw my mother, father, Gregory, and Wendy. Everyone heaved a collective sigh of relief.
My mother lunged and pulled me into her arms. She was crying. “Oh, how did this happen to you, sweetheart? This is awful. I was worried sick. I thought we’d protected you enough, but no! I can’t believe you still got hurt!”
My father sighed. “Where did we go wrong?”
