Tiffany’s voice was low and icy.
Sarah raised her eyebrows. “Well, we’re not
just regular friends. Plus, Danny doesn’t live
here, so you wouldn’t know him.”
<
“Not regular friends?” Tiffany repeated,
laughing coldly.
The atmosphere was tense, and everyone
went silent.
I poured a glass of whiskey, stood up, and
looked at Tiffany. “Thanks for investing in See
the Horizon. Sarah and I are close. This toast
is to a successful movie.” I downed the drink.
Sarah and Tiffany stood up, looking at me
with concern.
Before I could finish, Sarah grabbed the glass
and drank the rest, smiling at me. “Your
stomach can’t handle that.”
“Don’t show off.”
The scene triggered a memory. Three years
ago, at a similar dinner, the director insisted I
drink a full glass of whiskey.
I couldn’t refuse, so I lifted the glass, ready to
drink.
But Sarah grabbed it and drank it for me,
smiling. “Don’t torture the newbie.”
Sarah and I looked at each other. I snapped
back to reality and saw Tiffany’s face.
She scoffed, clapping. “Sarah and Danny are
really close. They can even share a drink.”
Sarah opened her mouth, but I cut her off.
“I’m tired from the flight. I won’t stay long.
We’ll see each other again.”
く
“Have fun tonight. It’s on me.”
I stood up, not even glancing at Tiffany.
Sarah looked at me, worried. “You okay? I’ll
take you home.”
I shook my head. “I can get back by myself.”
“You sure you can find your way?” Sarah
smiled. “Come on, I need to deal with
something, too.”
I wasn’t planning on staying in New York long,
so I booked a hotel. Sarah said she had extra
apartments in her building and invited me to
stay there.
I refused a few times, but she insisted, so I
gave in.
L
Sarah showed me to the apartment and even
made the bed. “I live upstairs. Call me if you
need anything.”
“The cleaning lady keeps the apartment clean,
but it’s empty. I’ll have someone come by
tomorrow.”
Sarah smiled. “Just make do for tonight.”
I looked at the apartment and smiled. “Okay.
Thanks for making my bed, director.”
“You’re such a goofball.”
After showing me around, Sarah was about to
leave, but she suddenly hugged me.
I froze, unsure if I should hug her back.
<
She hugged me tighter, whispering, “Danny,
it’s been too long.”
I threw myself into the movie, spending my
days at the studio and my nights with Sarah.
She was a great cook and quickly helped me
gain a few pounds.
One day, as we were leaving work, Sarah
smiled and asked, “What do you want for
dinner? Didn’t you want sweet and sour ribs?”
“Enough, Sarah! Can’t you see I’m getting
fat?”
As we joked around, Tiffany suddenly
appeared, blocking our way.
<
She had been coming to the studio a lot,
acting like she wanted to talk, but I avoided
her.
“Tiffany, if you’re worried about the movie,
you can cancel your investment. I won’t
charge a fee,” Sarah said.
But Tiffany ignored her, walking to me,
“Danny, can we have dinner? There’s a lot I
want to say.”
I knew if I didn’t agree, she would keep
bothering me.
I sighed and nodded, then looked at Sarah.
“You go home. I’ll talk to her.”
“Danny…” Sarah was about to say something,
but she held back, glaring at Tiffany. “I’ll wait
く
for you.”
She walked away.
As soon as Sarah was gone, I turned to
Tiffany. “Say what you want, it doesn’t matter,
because there’s nothing left to talk about.”
Faced with my attitude, Tiffany forced a
smile. “You lied to me. You said we would
talk when you got back.”
“When I went to find you, you were gone. I
thought you went to see Mrs. Peterson, so I
drove all night to your hometown. Mrs.
Peterson said you didn’t go there.”
“Danny… Do you know how desperate I was?”
