A week later, my aunt and uncle came back
from overseas, and my brothers came home.
The two families sat in the living room, happy.
My aunt said, “Since my daughter is here, why
don’t we switch Kayla’s citizenship?”
The room was quiet.
Mom said, “It’s been years, we won’t change.”
My aunt and uncle started crying.
Mom and Dad didn’t know what to do.
My brothers joined.
My cousin smiled and seemed to be happy at
what was happening.
I said, “Why are you so happy?”
She said, “I’m happy for you. Before I was
terrified.”
I did not understand. “Trouble?”
“I do not know the things you rich people
know. No one wants to share their wealth.”
I was amazed. “You’re a kind person?”
I realized she was a kind person.
When she was going to do business, she
didn’t give an inch.
“I’m only kind to you.” She said, “I would not
be here without you.”
