Liam heard her and ran from his room in a
panic. He shoved me out of the way and
grabbed the railing to keep the wheelchair from rolling down the stairs.
I stood there, stunned, my throat tight. “It wasn’t me.”
The wheelchair was stuck on the stairs, and a couple of the staff were now blocking the way.
Liam quickly picked up Claire and carried her to
- me.
The staff brought the wheelchair over.
“Liam, I was so scared!”
“I thought I was going to die…” Her eyes were
red, and the fear in her eyes looked genuine.
After Liam comforted Claire, he looked at me with fury.
“Amelia, have you lost your mind?!”
“If anything happened to Claire, you would be
charged with assault! Do you understand that?”

I bit my lip, feeling deeply wronged, and my nose stung. “I didn’t do anything.”

“It wasn’t me, she grabbed my hand suddenly
and I just pulled back.”
Claire started to sob, “It’s my fault, Liam. Don’t
blame Ms. Amelia.”
“I didn’t lock the wheelchair. That’s why this
happened.”
“Claire, you don’t have to take up for Amelia,” Liam said coldly. “I know how she can be.”
“She’s used her tricks to get rid of any woman
who comes near me all these years.”
I couldn’t help but laugh through my tears, “So,
Uncle, you don’t believe me?”
“Do you deserve my trust?” he countered.
“Right, I don’t deserve it.”
“Only Claire deserves it. Whatever she says, you
く
Liam ordered the staff to block me.
“Apologize,” he demanded.
I looked at Liam, not believing what I heard.
He repeated himself, “Claire got hurt for no
reason, you should apologize.”
“What if I don’t?” I asked, tears streaming down
my face.
I thought I could handle something like this with
poise this time.
I had overestimated myself.
When all that love turned into a sword that cut
me deeply.
It hurt so bad.
“You know what I’m capable of,” Liam said,
coldly.

He looked at the staff behind me, and they looked at each other. Just as they were about to grab my arms.
I laughed, letting out a self–deprecating sound.
I released the handle of my suitcase and bowed to Claire:
“I’m sorry for what happened today. I shouldn’t have pulled away from you like that.”
“I’m sorry that I almost caused you to fall down the stairs.”
Claire looked shocked for a moment, and
Liam’s face grew serious.
I stood up and looked at Liam, “Is that enough,
Uncle?”
“If not, I can get on my knees, too.”
<
Liam’s expression was complicated, but he
didn’t say anything.
I grabbed my suitcase and walked downstairs.
When I got to the first floor, the housekeeper
said, “Sir was probably not in a good mood
today.”
“Miss, please don’t take it to heart. Over the
years, the way sir treated you, we could all see
it.”
She tried to smooth things over, while trying to
grab my suitcase.
I just smiled.
In the past, when Liam and I had an argument,
the housekeeper would always try to make
peace. After all these years, she hadn’t
changed.
<
But Liam and I could never go back to how
things were before.
“Miss, aren’t you going to the guest room?” she
asked, surprised.
I shook my head, “No, thanks.”
“But sir…”
“Tell my uncle thank you for everything. I won’t bother him anymore.”
This time around, that was more than enough.
I couldn’t go through last time’s pain again. Chapter 2

After getting Claire settled in, Liam called the
housekeeper, Mrs. Chen, and had her pull up
the security footage from the hallway.
<
When Mrs. Chen came in, she was hesitant and
looked like she wanted to say something, but
she held back.
Liam actually believed me. Even though I used
some sneaky tactics over the years to keep the women away, they were all pretty harmless.
I knew where the line was.
So when he saw on the security video that
Claire had actually started the fight, he wasn’t
too surprised.
He owed Claire a life.
As long as she didn’t go too far, he would let
her get away with almost anything.
“I knew it! Miss Amelia would never do that!”
Mrs. Chen said, angrily.
Liam rubbed his temples. “Make something
<
Amelia likes for dinner tonight.”
“But Miss Amelia left already.”
Liam froze. “What?”
“Miss Amelia asked me to thank you for
everything. And she said she wouldn’t bother
you anymore.”
Mrs. Chen’s tone was a little sarcastic.
Liam didn’t blame her. He just sighed, tiredly.
“Amelia’s always been like that, she can’t stand
even a little bit of unfairness.”
He told Mrs. Chen to go get dinner ready and
then tried to call me.
I didn’t answer. The more times he called, the
more frustrated he got until he finally threw his
phone on the desk.

Ever since that day a couple of weeks ago
when he thought I was going to confess my
feelings, he had been feeling a weird sense of
irritation.
Especially when he met my eyes or heard my
cool, distant tone.
