- 2.
It was a long time before my brother finally
arrived.
“Just spit it out. I don’t have time to waste
with you guys.
Mom was furious. “You ungrateful child! What
could be more important than your mother?
You haven’t even asked how I am!”
“What could possibly be wrong with you? Isn’t Ashley here taking care of you?”
My brother ignored her words, grabbing an
apple from the table and taking a bite.

My brother ignored her words, grabbing an
apple from the table and taking a bite.
Mom started yelling, “Do you know what I
went through to bring you into this world? I
almost died! I raised you, changing your
diapers and wiping your butt, and this is how
you treat me?”
“If I’d known you’d turn out like this, I wouldn’t have had you. You little monster! I brought
this on myself by birthing such an ungrateful
beast!”
My brother continued eating his apple,
unperturbed.
L
unperturbed.
“Say whatever you want. I’m not taking care
of you. You like Ashley so much; let her take
care of you for the rest of your life.”
Mom was speechless with rage.
“Fine! You won’t get a penny of my
inheritance! I’ll leave it all to your sister!”
At the mention of inheritance, my brother’s expression finally changed. He looked at her
suspiciously.
“What inheritance? You probably spent it all on medical bills. I don’t care about your

“What inheritance? You probably spent it all
on medical bills. I don’t care about your
measly savings anyway.”
“Don’t think you can trick me into taking care
of you with talk of inheritance. I could earn
more money working than wasting my time
here.”
Mom, enraged, threw a glass at him.
I watched their interaction silently, without
intervening.
In my past life, I longed for family affection
and was completely unguarded.
<
and was completely unguarded.
Seeing them argue, I foolishly tried to
mediate.
Later, I learned that Mom put on this “unloving mother, ungrateful son” act so that my brother wouldn’t feel obligated and I
would willingly take on her care.
But not this time.
“Ashley, say something! Are you just going to let your brother treat your mother like this?”
Mom, unable to win the argument with my brother, turned her anger towards me.
L
I sneered inwardly.
I should have known Mom would never
willingly leave her inheritance to me.
She always favored my brother, from the time
we were kids.
I was taught to be obedient and put my
brother first.
Right after I graduated, she started asking me
for $500 a month.
When I refused, she showed up at my
workplace, accusing me of being ungrateful.
く
I had no choice but to agree to give her $400
every month just to get her to leave.
Later, I found out she was giving all that
money to my brother.
He was lazy and spent money recklessly, claiming he didn’t have a cent when asked to contribute to Mom’s hospital bills.
I had to scrape together the money for her surgery myself.
Even after all that, Mom only cared about my
brother.
<
He rolled his eyes, completely unafraid. “Don’t
think you can trick me into taking care of you
with talk of inheritance. You might as well just
die, it would be easier for everyone.”
Mom’s hand trembled as she pointed at him.
“Not only do you refuse to care for me, but you also curse me to die? I tell you, even if you’re heartless, I still have your sister!”
“Get out! I disown you as my son!”
Hearing this, I quickly chimed in, “Mom, since you don’t want him as your son anymore, why not officially disown him?”
