“No,” Dominic said firmly. “We handle this ourselves. Quietly. Carefully. But going to the cops isn’t an option.”
I hated that he was probably right. Still, the idea of letting Nathan continue his schemes without immediate consequences made my skin crawl.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady the turmoil inside me. “Fine. But if we’re doing this ourselves, then I’m taking him off my case. I can’t have him representing me in court. Not after everything I know now.”
“Agreed,” Dominic replied, his gaze steady.
I hesitated, looking at him with a mix of frustration and desperation. “Why can’t you do it? You’ve got all the evidence. You’re the one who dug up all this dirt on him. Just… confront him yourself.”
Dominic raised an eyebrow, his expression firm. “Because it needs to come from you, Raina. You’re his client. If I go in there, he’ll spin it into something else–turn it into a power play or a threat. He needs to hear it from you, and you need to make it clear he’s done.”
The thought of facing Nathan made my stomach churn. The idea of standing in front of him, knowing what he was capable of, felt like stepping into a
lion’s den.
I clenched my fists, my voice trembling with anger and nerves. “Fine. I’ll do it. But don’t expect me to handle this alone.”
Alex’s arm slid around my side. His touch was firm yet surprisingly gentle, and I could feel the weight of his gaze as he leaned closer.
“I can go with you,” he offered, his voice low but steady. “To tell Nathan he’s off the case.”
I froze for a moment, turning my head to look at him. “You want to go with me?” Was this even a good idea?
He nodded, his expression earnest. “Yes. All I need is a chance to prove that I’m not the man I was before.”
The sincerity in his voice made my chest tighten, but it also set off warning bells in my mind. Was this a good idea? Could I trust him to be by my side during this confrontation without making things worse?
And yet, a part of me wanted to believe him. Wanted to believe that maybe, just maybe, he had changed. But then, my heart reminded me of the pain he’d caused the years of hurt that still lingered like a shadow over everything.
I hesitated, and Alex seemed to sense my doubt. His grip around me loosened slightly, giving me room to pull away if I wanted to. “Raina,” he added softly, “I know I’ve hurt you before, and I know I can never undo that. But if there’s any way I can make things right, let me.”
His words felt like they were‘ peeling away the layers of anger and mistrust I’d wrapped around myself, exposing the vulnerable parts I wasn’t ready to
confront.
Could I ever give him a chance? My thoughts tangled with each other, pulling me in different directions.
Before I could respond, Dominic’s voice cut through the moment like a blade. “We need to go. Now.”
He stood a few feet away, his posture tense as he scanned the area. His eyes darted to the darkened corners of the street, his body language screaming
urgency.
“Why?” I asked, startled by his abruptness.
Dominic glanced at me,
his
expression firm. “Because we don’t know who’s watching. And I don’t trust that Nathan doesn’t have eyes on us.
The mention of Nathan sent a chill down my spine. Dominic was right; the last thing we needed was to be caught off guard.
I swallowed hard and nodded, stepping away from Alex’s hold and moving toward Dominic’s car. Behind me, Alex hesitated for a moment before following, his footsteps heavy with unspoken words.
As I climbed into the passenger seat, Dominic slid behind the wheel, his jaw clenched tight. Alex moved to his own car but not before calling out, “I’ll be right behind you. Just to make sure you’re safe.”
Dominic rolled his eyes, muttering something under his breath as he started the engine.
As we pulled away from the curb, I caught a glimpse of Alex’s car following closely behind, his headlights cutting through the darkness. My thoughts churned, torn between the lingering pain of the past and the uncertainty of what lay ahead.
