Chapter 171

Dominle paced round the room, his steps heavy with frustration, and Eliza’s voice could be heard from the other room, shrill and insistent. I tried to shut it out, but it wasn’t possible. The woman had a way of getting inside your skin so that it felt like your nerves were trayed.
“She’s already acting like she’s married to you,” I muttered, standing with my arms folded and leaning against the well. “It’s disgusting, ”
Dominic’s Jaw clenched. “You think I don’t know that? I hate this as much as anybody.”
“Then why are you letting it happen?” I bit out, my voice rising.
He quit his pacing and took a step towards me. His face turned dark. “Because I need to keep her close. If I let her go, she’ll run to the media, and the Graham name will be dragged through the mod. With Grandpa gone, we can’t afford that kind of scandal.”
I shook my head, aggravated. “That’s not a good reason, Dominic. Keeping her at your house–around Faith and Caleb is wrong. You’re punishing your wife for nothing”
Dominic let out a breath, wiping his hand across the top of his hair. “I know it’s not great, but what am I supposed to do? Faith doesn’t get it.”
“Obviously she doesn’t-“I bemoaned. “How could she? You’re putting the woman who told you she was pregnant with your baby under the same roof as her. How do you think that looks to her?”
Dominic glared at me, but I did not back down. “Look,” I said, my tone firm, “one thing I do know about Eliza is that the more you rise to her bait, the strenger she becomes. She feeds off your exasperation. Stop letting her win.”
“I’m not letting her win,” Dominic snapped, but a hesitant flicker crossed his voice
“You are,” I said “And it’s going to cost you everything if you don’t stop. Faith just had a baby, Dominic. Do you know what that kind of stress can do to her? She could fall into depression. She’s already dealing with enough.”
“This is so fucked up. Dominic muttered, his shoulders drooped. “I hate this,” he mumbled.
“Then do something about it,” 1 said. “Focus on Faith. Show her that she’s your priority. Eliza might be in your house, but that doesn’t mean you have to let her ruin your marriage.”
He let out a beary sigh, his frustration palpable. “You’re right,” he admitted reluctantly.
“I know I’m right,” I said, my voice a little sotter now. “Don’t make the same mistake that I did. Don’t pride or some misguided sense of duty.”
woman you love slip away because of your
Dominic didn’t say anything for a moment, but I could practically see the gears in his head turning. He knew that I was right, even if he didn’t want to admit it.
I sat at the edge of the couch, the phone buzzing inside my pocket. I was on the verge of ignoring it and assuming it just another meaningless thing that would mean nothing to my life, but something told me to check the phone. Not a call–but a test.
Agent: “The maid is dead.”
My eyes narrowed at the screen. Adelaide. Dead? The weight of the words slowly settled.
“What’s wrong?” Dominic’s voice cut the leg, wary. He’d been pacing a moment before; now he just stood, eyes boring into me.
I turned my head slightly, trying to shake it off. “Adelaide. She’s dead,” I said flatly.
Dominic grunted low in his threat. “Good. The bitch had it coming.” He rubbed a hand over his face, muttering under his breath. Without awaiting a response, he turned to head upstairs and check on Falth and Caleb.
1 barely saw him go. My mind raced. Adelaide’s death wasn’t just convenient, it was suspicious. I wanted to know more.
I called Raine the moment Dominic was out of sight. She picked it on the second ring, her voice soft but steady.
“Hey,” I began, not knowing how to tell her. “I have some updates.”
“Is it bad?” she asked right off, changing the tone
“It’s about Adelaide,” I said, careful with the words. “She is dead.”
The line went silent on the other end, heavy with the weight of the silence. When she finally broke it, her voice was quivering
“Nathan,” she whispered. “He must have done in
Her confidence struck a chord. She knew. And that made sense.
“I’ll talk to my agent,” I said hastily, already sending a message confining the details surrounding Adelaide’s death. “Hang on.”
I sent off the message, waiting, tick by agonized tick
Finally, Raina broke the heavy silence. “Are you alright?”
I rolled back into the couch, kneading the nape of my neck. “That’s my question to you,” I said. “Are you alright?”
