“I didn’t expect you to be so cruel!”
I paused for a moment, then took another
bite of rice.
“How could I have known?” I asked, raising. an eyebrow.
“How could you not know?” he shot back.
“Why did she eat it if she knew?”
Darrell fell silent, caught off guard.
“She mentioned it to me before, and I remembered,” he finally admitted.
“I won’t talk to you now. I need to take her to the hospital immediately.”
“You prepared this meal. If anything happens to her, you’ll be responsible!”
Without waiting for a reply, he picked up Holly and rushed out.
I continued eating in silence.

The lawyer had sent the divorce agreement to my mailbox early that morning. I printed it out and signed it without. hesitation.
I kept looking at the ultrasound photo on the medical report–an unborn child.
I placed the agreement and medical records in the most visible spot on the table.
Thinking back on the past eight years, I took nothing with me.
At the airport, I flew to Chicago, waiting for Darrell to bring Holly back home.
Once I landed safely in Chicago, he called out my name multiple times.
No one responded.
Darrell’s heart clenched with an
overwhelming sense of panic.
“Alex? Baby! Wife? Are you home?”
He noticed the items on the table with his

sharp eyes.
When his gaze landed on the divorce agreement, he let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding, thinking I was simply upset.
But then he saw the next page–a photo of his child.
The medical record documenting the miscarriage.
Darrell’s hands began to tremble uncontrollably.
He sank to the ground, as if the weight of everything had finally overwhelmed him.
He whispered to himself, “No way… Impossible…”
“When did she get pregnant?”
“How could Alex have aborted our child?”
“No… I don’t believe it… How could it be possible?!”
“It must be fake! Yes, she’s lying to me!”

When I returned to the Wood family
mansion, my mother opened the door and studied me from head to toe.
She snorted coldly.
“Do you still think your choice back then was right?”
I paused for a moment, offering a bitter smile as I shook my head.
I was so wrong.
“Come in,” she said finally, her tone cold. “You won’t be the lady of a small family anymore.”
“I’m embarrassed even to tell people about it.”
“Remember, you are the sole heir to our Wood Group.”
Thankfully, my family‘ s support gave me the strength to rebuild my life.
No longer defined as the “old” or “childless woman” in the Thornton family’s eyes,

I’m only 28–young and ready to make my mark.
Without the burdens of the past, I began participating more actively in managing the group’s business.
People often call me “Little Wood.”
Even though I was focused on building my career, I received a call from Darrell.
His voice was laced with anger.
“Alex, it took me forever to track down your new number. Did you go to Chicago? Do you realize how dangerous it is for you to go there alone?”
“How long are you going to keep this up? You‘ re still joking about the child. What’s the point of being angry and leaving?”
“You‘ ve been gone for a month. Even if you want a divorce, you‘ ll have to come to me in person!”
I remained calm and reminded him gently.

“I’ve already signed the divorce
agreement. If you refuse to sign, I’ll take you to court for fraud and we’ll still get divorced.”
“… Fine, if you‘ re that brave, sue me! Without me, who’s going to call you Madam Thornton with respect? You‘ re so capable, even pretending with a fake report. If you were really pregnant, how could you bear to abort it? And just forgetting our anniversary–really, is it that serious?”
