Chapter 3
School was starting soon. I was packing my things in the dorm when Sophia came back.
She had changed dramatically since I’d last seen her.
She wore a mini skirt and high heels, and even had sunglasses on indoors.
Seeing me stare at her, Sophia disdainfully removed her sunglasses.
Under the lights, the traces of her plastic surgery were still obvious–no wonder she kept the sunglasses on even inside.
“What are you looking at? You think just because you wouldn’t lend me money, I had no other options? Amelia, don’t be so full of yourself.”
I said helplessly, “Since you’re so wealthy now, how about paying back what you owe me first? I’m broke, remember.”
Megan stepped in front of Sophia and said, “Amelia, it’s just a little money. Aren’t you embarrassed asking for it every day?”
I replied, “Why don’t you pay it back for her then? Since you’re such good friends, that small amount shouldn’t matter to you, right?”
Megan fell silent.
Sophia said irritably, “You’re really petty. Fine, I’ll give you the money right now, and after this we’re done with each other.”
She handed me $200.
After getting my money back, I didn’t want to deal with her anymore. I decided to apply for a room change with the housing office in a couple of days.
Sophia started trying on clothes in front of the mirror,
constantly asking Megan for her opinion.
Megan teased, “Why are you dressing up so pretty tonight? Going on a date?”
Sophia deliberately raised her voice, speaking toward me, “Yeah, Christopher asked me to dinner. He even made reservations
at my favorite sushi place. Which outfit do you think I should wear?”
Christopher was Sophia’s longtime crush—from a wealthy family, but he only liked beautiful women.
Sophia had gotten plastic surgery specifically for him.
Megan said excitedly, “Oh my God! Christopher asked you out? You have to seize this opportunity! You’ll be rich after this!”
Sophia said smugly, “Once I become his girlfriend, his family’s money will be mine. I’ll get you some cushy job where you collect a paycheck without working. And if he has other rich friends, I’ll introduce you to them too. People who cross me never end up well.”
I looked up and said, “Remember to keep your sunglasses on during the date—don’t want to scare Christopher.”
Just as Sophia was about to explode, her phone rang.,
She immediately answered sweetly, “Okay, I’ll be right down.”
After hanging up, she glared at me viciously.
“Amelia, don’t think you’re so great just because you have money! Once Christopher and I are together, I’ll make sure you can’t stay here anymore!”
With that, Sophia stormed out.
Watching her leave, I could only find it amusing.
Christopher was a playboy who would never marry Sophia.
I’d always known this and had tried to warn Sophia in my previous life.
Even when Christopher had confessed to me, I’d clearly rejected him. I knew he’d never change his ways.
But Sophia thought I was deliberately trying to stop her from getting surgery so I could seduce Christopher myself.
Now she’d gotten her wish and was dating Christopher, but I’d seen her face without the sunglasses. Her wounds had healed poorly.
The clinic that had done her surgery had already shut down.
I wondered: “Would Christopher, who’s always cared so much about appearances, continue pursuing her once he sees that face?”
