Chapter 17
Kaylee
“Father, forgive me, for I have sinned,” I started in confession, pouring out my heart to the Reverend.
“Speak, my child, for the Lord forgives all, and He will make you pure.”
I looked up before bringing my head back down. I didn’t need purity.
Ugh, I didn’t need forgiveness. I was only here because it was a family tradition–we always had to come confess our sins, and my fucking mother had roped me into this charade.
The scent of waxy candles and faint incense clung to the confessional like stale regret. The wood beneath me creaked in protest, almost like it couldn’t handle the weight of my thoughts.
“Father, I hate my best friend, and I want her to burn in hell. No, I feel like burning her myself…”
“Hate is a serious sin, my daughter, but the Lord sees the heart, and He will forgive you your sins,” the aged Father said in a shaky voice, as though his brittle soul couldn’t quite wrap itself around mine.
I didn’t believe in God, and sure as hell didn’t want His forgiveness. I just wanted Olivia to suffer. Was that too much to ask?
The old priest was silent for a moment, as if weighing his words carefully. Probably praying for the right scripture to throw at me.
“I understand your pain, child, but revenge only corrupts the soul. The Lord teaches us to love our enemies, to turn away from the darkness that seeks to consume us.”
But that was where the Reverend was wrong. I was already too far gone in the darkness to go back now, and frankly, I liked the darkness. The corner of my lips lifted to form a smirk.
“You don’t understand. I need her to pay. She took everything that was supposed to be mine.”
“Revenge is a path to destruction,” the Father replied, his voice soft but firm. “If you allow it to control you, it will destroy you from the inside out.”
His words had no meaning to me. My mind was pained, pulsing with images of everything she’d taken. I was only here because I had to keep up with appearances. Pretend to be the good girl when I’d long since set that version of me on fire.
I stared at the wooden beams above me, their rough grain blurry through the thin veil of tears I refused to shed. “Perhaps in time, you’ll find peace,” the Father added gently. “But first, you must find forgiveness within yourself.” Peace was a term that was overrated. Why find peace when there’s money? Fame? Power? Did I mention fame??
Olivia had to pay, and she would, in blood. I’ll make sure of that. She saw me as second to her, but I would be number one. She thought she was better than me–she should just wait until I take everything right from under her.
I walked out of the cathedral with the confidence of a thousand people. The floor echoed beneath my stilettos like thunder, each step a declaration. Eyes turned at every corner I passed, people secretly taking pictures.
Well, what can I say? I’m just that attractive. I lifted my head high and walked majestically–they should feel honored to have supermodel Kaylee Kingsley in their measly midst.
I loved the way eyes kept following my every move. Even in the house of God, I could distract His followers. That thought brought a wicked smile to my lips. I didn’t just turn heads—I made necks snap.
I followed the pathway out of the massive cathedral. My driver opened the door, and I got in. There she was, with her perfect little smile. Fucking bitch.
“So, how was confession?” Her eyes shined with pure innocence.
If only she knew.
“It was fine,” I replied, my lips spreading wide.
“Well, amen to all your prayers, bestie,” she said. A wide, infectious grin spread across her face, as it the joy inside her couldn’t be hidden. Why was she always fucking smiling all the time?!
She irritated me, but I kept smiling. She couldn’t know what I had planned for her, and it was going to hit when she least expected it. “Okay… okay, I hope you’re ready, my darline because

myself to make sure you, my lovely Kaylee, have the time of your life. And bills? On me, of course.” She winked like I was some poor church rat she was doing a favor.
“I can’t wait,” I replied with fervor. “You know you’re the best, right? And I love you so much—more than the entire world!” I said, taking her hand in mine.
“You are my sister, Kaylee, and I’ll do anything for you, you know that, right?”
She nodded, and I pulled her into a tight hug, rolling my eyes at her back.
Little Miss Olivia–always so perfect and constantly throwing around the fact that she had money.
Why was her life so great? What exactly was she doing that I wasn’t? She was always a crowd favorite, and she didn’t even have to try. If not for my plans, I’m sure everywhere she walked would have been full of people singing her praises. Good thing I managed to curb that in time.
Olivia never worked too hard, yet she was always accepted. But me, on the other hand–I did everything right. EVERYTHING! Yet no one saw me for the gem I truly was. I was just Olivia’s best friend.
But all that was going to change soon enough. And when she realized who was responsible, she would have no power to stop me.
I would cherish that moment–the look on her face when she realized the one who took everything from her was the one person she trusted with her life, the one person she believed would never hurt her.
She always acted like she was better than everyone around her. I glanced at her–her attention was on her phone, that same smug smile plastered on her face. I wanted to strangle her, choke that smug look right off her perfectly smug face.
Even growing up, she was always the first one they looked at. When my parents would ground me for going out, she’d send me pictures from parties, cruises—laughing, free, untouched by consequences.
And my parents… they always compared me to her. Every time she came over, they practically worshipped her. She was the real definition of a wayward child, the kind my parents claimed to detest. But for Olivia, there was always an exception.
Hatred doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel about my dear ‘best friend‘.
And when it came to boys, Olivia got to date every single one I had ever liked. But this time, her beloved Philip was wrapped around my little finger.
“Hey, have you heard from Philip today?” I asked, pretending like we hadn’t been spending the nights together for years now.
Getting Philip was a piece of cake. He was never truly content with Olivia, so I figured–why not?
And to think this bitch sitting next to me had no clue… that was the best part.
“Yes, we talked this morning. I don’t think he went to work today—he still had some finishing touches to add before the day of the gala.”
“Nice work, by the way. Sebastian will have no idea what hit him that day. He’ll be so embarrassed! I can’t wait!“?
She nodded sheepishly.
Global Olivia–she was about to help Philip and me destroy the only person who truly loved and cared for her.
I would make sure she lost everything, bit by bit. Sebastian was the best thing that ever happened to her, but she had no clue.
He stormed into Manhattan as a strong, successful businessman–a ladies‘ man–and within a couple of months, she was getting married to him. And she had the audacity to ask me to be her maid of honor.
I’d had enough of being looked down upon, and my best friend was about to get exactly what she deserved.
I’m not a bad person. Just a girl who wants the best for herself. Selfish, maybe–but my mind is made up, and I will get what I want, whatever it took
