I nodded solemnly. “Really.”
Seth immediately tried to climb back over the railing, giving me a heart attack.
Charlotte coughed twice, while Seth stepped back.
He frowned. “No, wait. What if you change your mind?”
Ethan opened his mouth as if to say something. I gave him a look, and he closed it again.
I promised Seth, “I absolutely won’t go back on my word.”
“Put it in writing,” Seth thought for a moment, looking troubled. “Better yet, marry me legally.”
I answered without hesitation. “Alright.”
Ethan looked at me in disbelief. “Lou…”
His eyes reddened, which rarely happened. “Are you really going to throw away our seven–year relationship just for him?”
He knew I was susceptible to men’s tears, but only if it was a handsome man I actually liked.
Ethan’s face had lost its appeal to me the moment I saw him in those engagement photos with Anna.
I threw his own words back at him, saying impatiently, “Should I just let him die? It’s only a marriage certificate. Where’s your compassion now?”
Seth chimed in from the side, “You only had seven years with her, but I’ve loved her secretly for eight years. Plus, we’ve known each other since we were in diapers- much longer than you’ve known her.”
His words turned my unhappiness into suppressed laughter.
Ethan declared as he left, “I know you’re still angry, but don’t make a decision you’ll regret.”
With that, he walked away looking devastated.
Charlotte gave his back the middle finger and mockingly repeated his words.
The siblings truly had me laughing heartily.
