I looked at the fresh blooming roses in his hand.
These were my favorite flowers during our relationship, which he would bring me regularly. However, in that photo of Anna trying on the wedding dress with him, there had been an identical bouquet.
My tone was calm as I said, “You shouldn’t give the same type of flowers to two different women. You feel regret now only because your two- timing failed. You’re just weighing your options.”
“Do you really care for me that much? Is it because you’ve invested so much that giving me up seems wasteful? Or am I just your backup plan since you can’t have Anna?”
I squeezed Seth’s hand. “I’m not someone who holds onto sunk costs. I hope you aren’t either.”
I had genuinely liked him during those seven years, but people changed.
The Ethan who had once gently suggested that Anna was being unreasonable and we did not need to accommodate her was long gone.
Ethan finally saw the disappointment in my eyes.
He forced a smile as he said, “I just made one wrong choice…”
I did not want to talk with him anymore and looked down to call security.
Seth’s hand loosened, and a bright white paper fell to the ground.
He feigned surprise as he picked it up. “Whose marriage certificate is this?”
The strained smile on Ethan’s face completely vanished as he stared at the certificate, feeling momentarily stunned.
I found it amusing watching Seth dust off the document and carefully tuck it into his pocket.
Without caring about Ethan’s reaction, I headed straight for the elevator with Seth.
