- 3.
When I woke up, Jake was already dressed.
Two buns sat on the small table. I wondered
when he’d gotten them. “Hot water’s ready. I’ll drop you off at work after you’re done.” “I can go myself.” He gave me a look. “Lots of
<
construction workers around here. Not safe for
a girl like you.” Then he added, “Call me when
you’re off. I’ll pick you up.”
After I finished getting ready, I noticed my debit
card on the table. The one I’d given him when I
proposed. “Don’t forget your card.” He glanced
at it. “Keep it. I’m not about to live off a
woman.” Liar. He was clearly broke. He didn’t
take it, and I didn’t argue. I figured I could use
the money to get us a better place. If Jake
refused, at least a new bed. I didn’t have the
mansion from my past life, but being with Jake
gave me a sense of peace I’d never known.
The good mood lasted until I got to work. As
soon as I stepped into the office, Sarah rushed
over. “Chloe, I have great news!” She lowered
her voice. “My cousin has a crush on you!” She
pulled me aside. “He’s not just anyone. Super
handsome, nice personality, Cambridge
graduate, and his dad is loaded. He’s turned
down tons of rich girls. Yesterday, he asked me
<
to set him up with you!” Her eyes were shining.
“Girl, your life is about to change!”
Cambridge graduate. Rich father. A name
popped into my head. My blood ran cold. I
forced a smile. “I’m so sorry, but you’ll have to
tell your cousin no. I’m not lucky enough. I’m
married.” Sarah didn’t believe me. “We’ve been
colleagues for a year. You didn’t even have a
boyfriend. How can you suddenly be married?”
“It’s true. We got the license. Haven’t had the
wedding yet. You’ll get an invitation.” I smiled
again. “I have classes to teach. Gotta run.” I
practically fled. Only when I was out of the
room did I feel the strength drain from my
limbs.
Ashton. He wasn’t supposed to show up yet.
Why was he here so early? And how did he
know I taught at this elementary school with
Sarah? My hands and feet were ice cold. I told
myself, This time I’m married. I have Jake. I will
not repeat the past.
