Liam reached me, trying to grab my hand. I
instinctively dodged.
Liam’s tears streamed down.
“Jenny, you can’t marry Cole just to spite me,
it’s unfair.”
“I know you always wanted to be my bride,
let’s get our marriage license today, I won’t
joke around anymore, okay? Don’t marry
him.”
I found him ridiculous.
“Why do you think so highly of yourself? |
く
married my husband because I love him,
because he’s worthy of a lifetime
commitment.”
“Do you think everyone is as childish as you,
treating marriage as a joke, as a way to
humiliate others?”
“Please leave, Liam. You’re not welcome
here.”
Seeing my determination, Liam knelt down. “I’m sorry, Jenny, I always knew you liked me
because of the letters and encouragement,
not because of me.”
“I was scared, insecure, I just wanted to see
how much you liked me, what you’d do for
me.”
“I was too arrogant. You’d never leave me,
I’m sorry, Jenny, will you forgive me? I’m
begging you, don’t marry anyone else.”
Liam cried like a child. But I felt nothing.
Before, I would have hugged him. Now, I was
<
just a cold observer, watching the drama
unfold.
Drones and cameras focused on Liam’s
crying face. He was like a child who lost his
favorite toy.
The scene was live–streamed. Everyone saw
Liam, who had berated me for forcing a
marriage, begging me not to marry Cole.
The commotion was so big that even Chloe
found out. She rushed to the stage, trying to
pull Liam up, but he slapped her away. “Liam, stop it, everyone’s watching. You’re
humiliating yourself, have you forgotten what
you said at the courthouse? The whole city
saw it!”
“Get lost! If it weren’t for you, Jenny wouldn’t
have left me!”
“You even need a ghostwriter, yet you call
yourself a queen of journalism. You have no
right to say that!”
<
Scoffs rained down.
Chloe’s face turned red, slapping Liam.
“You wavered and drove Jenny away, and
now it’s my fault?”
“If you hadn’t pretended to be Cole, Jenny
wouldn’t have liked you! It’s karma! You
deserve to be alone hahaha!”
Liam’s eyes were bloodshot, strangling Chloe.
Chloe’s eyes rolled back, she convulsed,
kicking Liam’s groin. They wrestled.
The scene was broadcast live, going viral.
Their confession went viral. Chloe, in a fit of
rage, admitted that she and Liam framed my
family for the financial problems, resulting in
my father’s arrest.
Police arrived and arrested them. Chloe
panicked, clinging to Liam.
“Liam! Speak up! If it weren’t for you, I
wouldn’t have told the TV station to divert
attention, now you’re silent?”
<
Liam slapped Chloe.
“Bitch, you were the one who wanted to
make headlines, what does it have to do with
me?”
“If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have hurt
Jenny, it’s all your fault!”
Chloe’s eyes widened, betrayed by the man.
She grabbed a fruit knife and stabbed Liam.
She laughed maniacally: “Let’s die together!”
Chaos erupted. The police took them away,
Liam was rushed to the hospital.
I didn’t pay much attention to what happened
afterward. The wedding made headlines, my
family was cleared, my dad was released.
Liam’s family was arrested, Chloe was
criminally detained. She faced charges of
abuse of power, defamation, and attempted
murder.
Her career was over. She faced 10-30 years
in prison.
<
Liam, severely injured, almost died on the
operating table.
Cole and I went to the Maldives for our
honeymoon the day after the wedding. We
returned two months later.
I saw Liam. He’d lost a lot of weight, his
cheeks sunken, dark circles under his eyes,
and stubble around his lips.
He wasn’t directly in charge of the company,
so he was released after recovering. His
family, however, was ruined.
He learned about my return and tried to see
- me.
I was in my Maybach, my dad trying to cheer
me up.
I had no feelings for him, but he was still my
father. I wasn’t angry because I didn’t expect
anything.
Seeing Liam blocking the car, my dad yelled.
“You brat, you dare show your face to Jenny?
“”
く
Get lost!”
“Jenny, I just want to say a few words,
okay?”
Liam stared at me stubbornly.
I got out of the car. Liam looked at me
intensely.
I looked at him calmly.
“What is it? I have a story to write, no time
for you.
I was also a journalist. Unlike Chloe, I focused
on tough, thankless stories about ordinary
people. I didn’t need to create an image.
Before, I wrote for Chloe. Now, I worked for
myself.
My recent stories had gone viral. I was now
the top journalist at the station.
Liam pulled out a sweet potato.
(6
‘Jenny, it’s hot, eat this. Your favorite. I kept
it warm.”
“Also, I quit smoking, I won’t do anything you
く
dislike anymore, okay?”
“Jenny, I-”
I interrupted, coldly, like I was looking at a
stranger.
“Liam, do you know that late regret is
worthless?”
Liam’s face turned pale.
“Stop the self–righteous melodrama, I don’t
need your repentance or amends.

“The best blessing is never seeing each other
again.”
“I’m doing well, please don’t bother me again.
Goodbye.”
I turned and left. In the rearview mirror, Liam
looked frail, like a piece of paper. He knelt
down and cried.
After that, Liam never appeared again.
Cole and I hadn’t seen each other for years,
but we had no adjustment period. We were a
perfect match.
His occasional sarcasm would make me
laugh. With him, I was happy, like a child,
without worries.
Two years passed peacefully. One winter, I
got an assignment.
The former Nancheng tycoon’s son stabbed
someone in court, resulting in one death and
one injury. He died in prison shortly after.
I wrote the story. At the end, I wrote for Liam:
Life’s a funny thing, up close, nothing’s
impressive.
