I pick it up and sigh when I see the name.
“Hello? Mom?” My mother has been messaging me more frequently. She found out I left the brigade and now Insists I return to Canada. But that’s not an option. I won’t leave until I’ve made Annie fall in love with me. “Aaron! What’s wrong with you? Why don’t you communicate with us? You know your grandfather isn’t well and wants to see you. You must return immediately. Where are you?”
Her endless questions give me a headache. Of course, I’m not going to tell her.
“I’m far away, and no, I won’t be back soon. If Grandpa feels unwell, he knows he can call me personally. And I don’t think you need me that much. I’m sure you and Dad have everything under control.”
Mom stays silent for a moment because she knows I’m right.
“Fine. I’ve done my duty by informing you. It’ll be on your conscience if anything happens. I’ll keep calling.” Mom hangs up, and I take a deep breath, rubbing the bridge of my nose.
My parents never tire of trying to control my life. But I won’t let them interfere with my happiness. I know I’ve been making progress with Annie, and leaving here isn’t an option. I’ve asked my Aunt Monique to send me all my paperwork. I’ll try to settle here in this city. Once my wrist is fully healed, I’ll see about setting up a practice. Or maybe she can return to her job, even if that pompous ex of hers works there.
But I won’t worry about that now. I know if I persevere, one day I’ll get the brilliant Annie to look at me and tell me she loves me.
I don’t hear the door open, and a young face watches me.
“You look like a fool, Bones, hahaha.” I snap out of my daydream and see my future brother–in–law teasing me. “Please, kid. Respect your elders,” I say seriously, but he just laughs harder.
“I’m not a kid. I’m almost as tall as you, and I’m only thirteen, hahaha.” It’s true. The Johnsons have good genes. The men are tall and attractive, and the women are beautiful.
“Oh, pardon me, Mr. Giant,” I say with a bow, and David Jr. laughs heartily.

“Annie sent me for you. She’s waiting for breakfast.” I smile at the thought of that beautiful doll. I feel in my heart that I’m succeeding. She seeks me out more often, and soon she won’t be able to live without me Please, God, let her fall in love with me soon. I pray silently, hoping to be heard by the Almighty.
As we head downstairs, we keep joking. Little by little, this family is finding a place in my heart. “Good morning!” I greet everyone, but I give Mrs. Sam a kiss. She’s the prototype of the mother I would have liked to have. She’s sweet and warm, while mine is an iceberg.
“Hello, son, come in.” I see Mr. David give me a strange look. He says nothing, just nods.
“Aaron, you took a while. What were you doing?” Annie makes a cute face. If she knew what her lovely

“Sorry, I was talking to my mother.” I don’t say more, and everyone falls silent.
“Did she ask you to return again?” Annie asks, and I just nod. I don’t want to talk more about my family.

I see everyone fall silent as I start eating breakfast. I hear a throat clear and look up.
“There’s no need for you to leave. There’s plenty of space for you here.”
‘m surprised that the serious man says these words to me. I look at the others and see their expectant faces. “Well, if I’m not a bother, then you’ll have me here.” My doll smiles. It’s the happiest smile she’s ever given me. And my heart? It beats with excitement.
When we finish breakfast, I help Mrs. Sam clear the dishes, while David’s father helps her to the couch,
“Thank you for helping me. David gets upset because I do it, but I like to help the ladies who work for me. I’ve never liked being an abusive boss. Annie’s mother explains, but I can’t help noticing the differences with my mother. She’s a woman who wouldn’t move a single utensil.
“Don’t thank me. It’s a pleasure to help you.” The lady smiles at me. When we reach the kitchen, we leave everything in the sink, and she asks me to sit in one of the chairs.
“Aaron. I’d like to ask you something.” I feel a bit tense, waiting for what she’ll say. “What are your intentions with my daughter?” I’m nervous, sensing it’s a kind of test to evaluate me. I’ve never been in this position, so it’s something new.
“Well, I’ll be honest. She attracted me from the first moment I saw her. And believe me, I already had a similar talk with the devilish twins. They guard her like a treasure.” Mrs. Sam smiles. She knows I’m telling the truth. Those sisters would do anything for my doll.
“Hahaha. I can vouch for that. Those girls adore my daughter, and I’m grateful. And not just them. Everyone who knows her loves her. Her inner beauty surpasses the outer, and as you can see, that’s saying a lot. Not because she’s my daughter, but she’s beautiful.” She suddenly falls silent, as if afraid to say what’s next. “Only he didn’t fall in love with her.” When she says “he,” I know who she’s referring to.
“Well, in life, that often happens. We go through life thinking we love someone, only to realize that person wasn’t meant for us. We go through trial and error in love.” She smiles and nods. “The important thing is that when we find someone who might be our soulmate, we fight to discover if we’re right. I don’t judge Annie for what happened with her son’s father. She was very brave to fight for the love she felt. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for her. That’s what I’m doing. I believe she could be the one for me, and I’ll fight to win her heart. If I don’t succeed, I’ll leave with my head held high and my heart content to see her happy.”
Mrs. Sam looks at me with tears brimming in her eyes.
“I know you’re a good young man, and I truly hope you win my daughter’s love. She doesn’t look at you unfavorably. You just need to persevere.” She takes my hand and gives it a small pat. This show of support is very important to me. I hope never to disappoint her trust, should I manage to get Annie to accept me someday.
