- My Foolish Son
Susan (Liam’s mother)
I’m reviewing some things at home when suddenly the doorbell rings. It seems a bit strange since it’s already late for visitors. When it rings again, I personally go to open the door.
“Liam?” My dear son is at the door. I can see in his eyes that something is wrong. He drops his suitcase on the floor and pulls me into his arms. I see silent tears begin to spill from his eyes. I let him cry it out. I stroke his soft hair, comforting him as I did when he was my little boy. “What’s wrong, honey? Did you fight with your
vife?”
He shakes his head, takes my arm, picks up his suitcase, and we enter the house.
for a while.
“Mom, I’m an j***t. A damn i***!” His red–rimmed eyes tell me he’s been crying
“Do you want to tell me what’s going on?” We sit on the sofa, and he hangs his head, resting his arms on his
legs.
“Mom, I’ve been so wrong. Today I found out so many things, and I’m ashamed of myself. I hate myself for everything I’ve done.” Seeing him so devastated brings tears to my own eyes. A child’s pain is doubled when mother feels it. In those moments, you wish you could take their place and help them carry the suffering. “I asked Maria for a divorce. What we had should never have been. In my stupid attempt to fulfill the promise I made to her after stealing her virginity, I hurt the person I truly love. I destroyed my chances of being happy for someone who has manipulated my emotions and feelings for so long.”
As he speaks, I imagine what he’s talking about. And I also feel guilty. In my eagerness to fulfill my dream of having a daughter, I brought unhappiness into my own son’s life. But who would have thought something like this would happen? My husband readily accepted the son I had from abuse, and to this day, they have a wonderful relationship. The girl I brought home simply wasn’t what I thought she was.
“You’ve finally realized your true feelings, haven’t you?” With his head down, he can only nod slowly. For years, we hinted that what he felt for Annie was something deeper, but he never wanted to accept it. Something held him back, but he never said what it was. Perhaps if he had opened up to us more, we would be facing a completely different scenario.

“Yes, Mom. Now everything is clear to me. I swear I didn’t know I loved her so much!” His voice comes a mournful cry. Now he understands the grave consequences of his mistakes.
“Well, I’m not going to say I told you so. But I think you were the only one who didn’t realize it. Your face lit up when she looked for you. If you fulfilled one of her whims, your smile told us that it made you happy. And when she was late coming home during the holidays, your anxiety betrayed you. How could you not see all
that?”
He doesn’t answer me, but I think he’s just beginning to realize everything he didn’t see. I approach him and hug him. I know he’s hurting right now. He missed the wonderful opportunity to be with Annie during her pregnancy, and he’s missing out on his son’s best moments with the woman he loves.
“What am I going to do now?” he asks me, but I don’t have an answer. He must discover that for himself. “All I can tell you is that if you truly love her, you must fight, but I warn you, it will be very difficult. That boy found her in her worst moments and has been accompanying and helping her to heal. He loves your son as

of what he did. That maybe, theirs is
My son straightens up and wipes his tears. I can see that his soul is shattered. On the one hand, he knows he has lived a lie for years, and on the other, he realizes that he willingly hurt his true love.
“I’m not giving up. If she fought for me for so long, now I will fight for her. But first, I have to get my divorce.” I sigh. It’s still too early to say that everything will be as easy as it sounds. Something tells me that girl is going to cause him a lot of trouble. But I don’t say anything. He’s got enough on his plate with everything he found out tonight.
“Are you staying here?” He nods. “This is your home, son, and I’m glad you’re back.”
“I feel so ashamed. Of you, of Dad, of Lewis. I acted like a teenager who’s being denied something. I was impulsive and capricious. At twenty–five, I’ve acted like a complete jerk.” I listen to him, but I don’t contradict him. The truth is that in recent years, he has become self–centered. From one day to the next, he stopped being that sweet boy and then a generous teenager. His character changed after Maria arrived at this house, but we couldn’t see it in time.
“The important thing is that you recognize it. Better late than never. I’m glad to have my baby back.” I pat him, but Liam just laughs and blushes.
“Mom! I’m not a kid anymore. I’m a man, and I’m a father too.” I burst out laughing. I hope the old Liam will come back into our lives. He has finally rid himself of the burden that prevented him from being himself
again.
“Let’s go to the kitchen; I’ll make you something to eat. I don’t suppose you were on call today, was I wrong?” I ask him as we walk towards the kitchen. He sits down at the breakfast bar and watches me prepare him a
sandwich.
“No, I’m supposed to go in tomorrow. But I think I have clothes here, so no problem.” He’s right. Even though he left, his room is intact, and he has everything he needs for work.
I try to lighten his mood, so I start asking him about work. He tells me in broad strokes what’s been going on, just like he used to when he lived here.
At that moment, I see him receive a message on his cell phone. He hesitates whether to check it or not, but when he decides to, I see an unfamiliar joy on his face.
“Look, Mom, It’s Annie.” He shows me the picture, and it’s a photo of my grandson yawning. He’s the cutest little boy in the world.
“He’s so cute! He looks just like you when you were born.” I take out my phone and show him my photo gallery. He’s surprised when he sees what I show him.
“It’s true! We’re identical, hahaha. Annie could never deny that he’s my son. But maybe when he’s older, he’ll change and look like her. She’s even prettier than before.” He blushes when he says that. My poor son. So in love, he is, and he never wanted to accept it.
“True. Motherhood has made her even more beautiful. Maybe that’s why Aaron doesn’t leave her side.” With

competition.

“He’s there with her. Maybe all is lost for me. But if there’s no other chance, I’ll make sure to be a present
father. I can’t let my son see him as his father. No, I won’t allow it.”
“Well, let’s let sincerity decide who wins, and whoever doesn’t get the girl, steps aside and wishes her and the Wictor happiness.”
He just nods. But he must be aware that at this point, he has everything to lose.
I smile at him, trying to make him feel my support. My foolish son. It’s your turn to suffer in love.
Maria
“Hello. It’s me. Your husband just arrived, and from what I heard, he’s staying here. I’ll keep you posted.”
I hang up the call. It’s the best idea my “mother” could have come up with. I’m sure it’s going to be useful to
me, hahaha. Let’s see who has the last laugh, “hubby.”
